I have heard that there are both plastic and metal lock shafts out there. But to be honest I don't see where it would make a difference due to the manner in which the lock catches. Even if someone were to break off the end of the plastic shaft it would not release the teeth which is covered by a metal frame. And I fee sure that it is not a standard plastic but more of a high impact resins material.
Well I sent masterlock a e-mail on the issue. If the picture shows metal then that is what it should be...change the picture then.
I have a little extra security in the fact that in the winter I have a Tonneau cover that comes down over the top of the tailgate that has two little locks. Not much help but a little.
In the Summer I have the tail gate locked in the shop and have my cabover camper loaded.
