Tailgate stolen

Some low down dirty basta@$ stole the tailgate off my 08 F-350. I'm currently working with the insurance company on a replacement. The dealer want's $3200.00 without the step. Any suggestions on how to protect my new tailgate? Thanks, LEO.

lock it or put a clamp on the hinge so they can't just take it off.

Sounds right. I just read in Diesel Power magazine (I think it was) that the '08 SD's were prime targets for tailgates disappearing.

They also said that Texas, California and Florida were at the top of the list for states.

Hope it all works out for you,

Tim

I put a hose clamp on my pivot point with the screw facing under the truck when tailgate is open. Havta crawl under the bumper to take it off.
I almost had my tailgate stolen 2 years ago, but that hose clamp saved me/it. There's a lock you can buy, but .75 cents was cheaper than $25.00.

I use the tailgate lock from Amazon.com. PLUS, there's a lock in the tailgate that your key fits in that you should lock, too.

Go with the hose clamp as Blackeyed1 says. We've been using the clamp method since the mid 1980's. The tail gate locks aren't worth a hoot as the neighbor lost 2 tail gates with locks before he listened to me about the clamp.

The hose clamp is more secure than the keyed lock?

But it takes about 5 seconds to unscrew a worm clamp, right?

Not if you put it on correctly. To put it on correctly you unhook the tailgate from the cables on each side, tip the gate up & out of the slot on the pass. side, slip the clamp on, let the gate down to the lowest point, rotate the clamp forward as much as possible to tighten & swivel without binding, rehookup the cables & your done. So if you can do that in 5 seconds on my tailgate come on over & give it a try. With a screwdrive I can pop your locked tail gate in seconds.

I'm sure they can undo the worm screw on the clamp, but I'm going on the assumption they won't be carrying around a phillips/standard screwdriver, and crawl under the bumper on their backs to get at the clamp screw.
But I've been wrong before (but not often):

The #$^#$%^ bring tools and crawl on their backs to steal spare tires, both cutting lift winches and cable locks, what makes you think a hose clamp will do more than annoy them if they have the time and cover to steal a tailgate?
