Some low down dirty basta@$ stole the tailgate off my 08 F-350. I'm currently working with the insurance company on a replacement. The dealer want's $3200.00 without the step. Any suggestions on how to protect my new tailgate? Thanks, LEO.
I put a hose clamp on my pivot point with the screw facing under the truck when tailgate is open. Havta crawl under the bumper to take it off.
I almost had my tailgate stolen 2 years ago, but that hose clamp saved me/it. There's a lock you can buy, but .75 cents was cheaper than $25.00.

Go with the hose clamp as Blackeyed1 says. We've been using the clamp method since the mid 1980's. The tail gate locks aren't worth a hoot as the neighbor lost 2 tail gates with locks before he listened to me about the clamp.
But it takes about 5 seconds to unscrew a worm clamp, right?
Not if you put it on correctly. To put it on correctly you unhook the tailgate from the cables on each side, tip the gate up & out of the slot on the pass. side, slip the clamp on, let the gate down to the lowest point, rotate the clamp forward as much as possible to tighten & swivel without binding, rehookup the cables & your done. So if you can do that in 5 seconds on my tailgate come on over & give it a try. With a screwdrive I can pop your locked tail gate in seconds.
I'm sure they can undo the worm screw on the clamp, but I'm going on the assumption they won't be carrying around a phillips/standard screwdriver, and crawl under the bumper on their backs to get at the clamp screw.
But I've been wrong before (but not often):

The #$^#$%^ bring tools and crawl on their backs to steal spare tires, both cutting lift winches and cable locks, what makes you think a hose clamp will do more than annoy them if they have the time and cover to steal a tailgate?
