Saw a website yesterday where they were selling tailgate locking devices that wrap around the right hinge pivot, for $19.99, plus shipping and handling, totalling around $24.00.
They talked about how easily tailgates are being stolen off trucks, especially ones with the "man-step". One of our local dealers had 3 "man-step tailgates stolen recently.
Thought it would be a good safety feature until I started thinking about it.
So I went to the hardware store and bought a hose clamp. Installed it around the pivot point with the screw head facing downwards behind the bumper.
Unlikely someone will have a screwdriver handy to crawl under the back bumper and spend that much time to steal my tailgate.
Is it that easy for someone to steal the tailgate with the handle locked? never thought about it. Although I don't have a man step tailgate I would be terribly P*O'd if I came out to my truck and my tailgate was gone. How would they get it if it's locked with the key? Sorry, just not a tailgate expert.
Last weekend I bought a louvered tailgate for a fifth wheel from a guy who worked as a mechanic for Ford. He advised me of the same hose clamp idea. If someone wants it, they will still get it, but this would slow them down!

unlocked its a lift & pull..
with the hose clamp, at least they have to fight it in the open.
I am working on getting an electric lock, so I can remember to lock the tailgate when I lock the truck.
Unlocked I understand. My question was if it's locked is it easy to steal? I understand someone determined will get it, but if you manually lock it with your key, is it easy to get off?
The tail gate lock is surounded by the same plastic BS that the door locks are. Without the Jimmy Jammers a simple screw driver unlocks them. Maybe the same for the tail gate?

Same for the tailgate. But, Jimmi Jammers also makes a lock protector for the tailgate. I've got them on all four doors, and the tailgate.
