I know that I've seen threads about this, but the search function on this site really leaves something to be desired in my opinion.
At any rate, a friend asked me today if I kept my truck parked inside, which I do. He then went on to tell me that there have been several tailgate thefts in the area recently. Several different brands.
What are some of the common methods that forum users have employed to keep the tailgates on their Super Duties?
Put a hose clamp around the passenger side hinge. This prevents them from being able to lift the tailgate out of that side hinge. Sure, the thieves can use a screwdriver to take the clamp off, but it takes them more time and they might just run off to the next one instead of chancing getting caught. If you don't plan on taking your gate off, you can also cut the head of the bolt down on the clamp screw so they cant turn it easily.
Mine was stolen a couple years ago. After it was replaced I put a McGuard tailgate lock on it as soon as I got home. Had it ready to install. Uses a special key to put it on and take off. Similar to wheels. Hose clamp with a polycarbonate housing. Plus keeping the tailgate locked when I am not using it. $20 cheap investment for a deterant.
If you use a hose clamp, open the tailgate to a 45 degree angle and have a helper tighten the clamp from under the truck. The thief wiill then need a helper also.
This is what I did on my truck, I installed a stainless hose clamp as others have....plus I rigged up a cable that is bolted to the tailgate with an allen head bolt. The cable runs along the tailgate and locks to the bracket that you can hook ropes or tiedown straps to.
YES! the crooks can bypass all this tuff with the rights tools or a big bolt cutter but that takes time and the crooks don't want to spend too much time doing their theft. Also I know the lock is unlocked and the elec. tape is there to keep the cable clamp from scratching my bed liner.
Just got a master lock tailgate lock that goes on the post you slide the tailgate out of , along with the tailgate latch lock should slow them down enough to take he desire away.
Thanks Poncho450, Just ordered one for my truck. Hopefully it won't be needed though.
I'm hoping the same thing. Even though my truck seldom sits outside overnight, I take an annual Florida vacation. Someone could try to snag it when I'm there or parked in a motel for the night on the way. Under $16 I figured it was worth a try.
