anyone have any preference of one brand tail gate lock over the other?
Whichever one suits your needs. I looked for ease of installation as well as removal which for me was the Master. As I said above, 15 seconds or less - and it comes off just as fast. They give you two keys so when you lose one, there's at least a chance of finding the second

I put one Master Lock key on a key ring with each of my truck keys so I will always have a Master Lock key with me. Not to mention that with the replacement cost of a Ford OEM key I darn sure take care not to lose one.
I like these guys!! I am going to try the tailgate and drivers doors! and if I see anybody running down the road with a tailgate, i will throw my tire iron at them!

I just bought and installed one, and it seems promising. But is it supposed to be that loose? I can slide it pretty far towards the right and it definitely doesn't cover all of the hinge opening.
Mine does it a little loose, but it fits to where it does do its job well. I guess if you wanted to go a little over board and if room allows you could mount the Master lock the then next to it do the radiator clamp method as secondary security measure. Plus it would keep the Master Lock from movement.
The velcro does a good job of keeping it secure to the side of the gate. Having it a little loose, allows you to get the key in a little easier for removal.
I'm very happy that I ditched the band clamp idea a truck ago. I have for one reason or another needed to pull the tailgate loose on the that side of the truck 4 times in the last two days. If I still had that radiator clamp on there I fear I would still as of now be out turning a screwdriver.
I have heard that there are both plastic and metal lock shafts out there. But to be honest I don't see where it would make a difference due to the manner in which the lock catches. Even if someone were to break off the end of the plastic shaft it would not release the teeth which is covered by a metal frame. And I fee sure that it is not a standard plastic but more of a high impact resins material.
