Ok so I went to start my truck the other day 2002 f250 7.3 4x4 and it wouldn't start, just cranked and kinda wanted to start for a sec then just cranked but wasnt even close to starting. It had sat for about a week. Let it be known that I have done so much crap to this truck and I'm really getting tired of working on this thing. I have done ball joints, steering linkage, starter, Turbo rebuild, glow plugs, glow plug relay, injector o rings. I have a hunch its a fuel issue, I was thinking about doing the hutch mod and maybe the screens are plugged up in the tank.. I don't know. Thinking about getting it going again and selling, I have had around twenty rigs and never as many problems as this powerstroke has given me. So tired of cranking wrenches on this rig its all I have done since I got it. Has 179k on it. Probably the cleanest crew cab long bed black 02 lariat ive seen, six speed too. Just getting really tired seams like one thing after another. Oh yeah no check engine light either. Anyway there it is.. any input would be helpful
( update ) it wouldn't start this morning around 38 degrees Fahrenheit, I plugged it in to the block heater for a half day and It fired right up tonight. WTF would cause that. It should easily start without a block heater at 38 degrees thats not that cold. When i tried to start it this morning I cranked it for five to seven seconds three times with no start. When it started tonight after it had the block heater plugged in for several hours it took maybe two seconds of cranking before it started. I'm at a loss here.
edge monitor shows- 14.2 battery volts, glow plug relay starts at 10.9 and increases to 11.3 over about ten seconds after key is cycled, ICP is 550 ish at idle and 2400 at 3/4 throttle.
Just a backyard wrench here, maybe cam shaft sensor. They did have a recall on them a while back. I had mine replaced under recall about 6-7 years ago.
possibly a crank shaft positiong sensor look on you tube and type that in and you should see some videos on the 7.3 i just seen a few of them the other day good luck
Cam position sensor sounds like a great place to start. It tends to be the cause when there are no warning signs before a no start and the engine cranks strong but wont start. It is about a 5 min fix so you wont spend another frustrating day wrenching on the 7.3. Do yourself a favor and buy the ford part. The after market CPS's (advanced, autozone....) are junk and will leave you stranded in a few months and the cost is about the same.
If it makes you feel any better I'm about over my 2000 F250 as well. I bought it a year ago and have put about $1500 into it including a tow to the dealer. This is the first vehicle I have ever had to tow in 25 years of vehicle ownership.....
Had the same issue, mine turned out being a relay. I believe it was for the fuel pump right next to the horn relay. Swapped the two and was good to go. Of course, after that I kept a spare on hand.
Had an 2001 7.3PSD. In 170K miles there were two times I had no start
1st was the cam position sensor - easy fix, one 10mm bolt easily accessed on the front of the engine. You get it from under the truck. There is a recall on this sensor. If this truck never had it done, it's free. Take your VIN to Ford and have them look it up. I got mine from the International truck dealer for about $30 less then Ford at the time ($90). They have come way down in price since then. The recall came out 6 months after I purchased it.
2nd time was when the truck sat outside in about 5 degree weather for 2 days. I pushed her into a heated garage and it fired right up next morning. I now use additive when below 10 degrees.
