Completed the high idle mod yesterday I was wondering could we start our cold trucks with the high idle on? I assume it stays at high idle only in park? I was thinking of a on delay timer for it 30-60 seconds maybe? Then a temperature controller to make it automatic The problem is what temperature to go to high idle, and shut off?
Mine would idle up to around 1000 rpm after a few minutes. This mod takes the engine up to 1200 quick! I think it was for the trucks that used the pto off the transsmision.
I had a couple occasions this last summer, while camping, when this feature would have come in real handy. Ended up having to use a rock on the go pedal.
The cold temp hi idle automatically brings her up according to outside temperature, but it does it after the truck has a certain bit of oil and water temp. The problem with using the hi idle mod, is it ramps up idle soon as it sees its in park, brake on, revs up to 1200. I wouldnt leave this set to hi idle if its cold out, for this reason, its going to override the computer for cold starts and kick up the idle right away.
I don't like immediately revving it up to 1200 rpm right after a cold start, so I wait a minute first. Problem is by then the truck automatically high idles anyway Hence why I think this mod is useless. I suppose if you have a reason to idle more than 10 minutes at a time it could prevent wet stacking, but I just shut my truck off if its going to idle that long anyway.

I had always wanted to do one of the high idle mods when I had my 2005. Seemed like a good idea as the automatic high idle ceases to function once certain temp parameters are met.
BTW, my truck would idle 4+ hours at a time in the winter. I personally think wet-stacking is a myth.

I'm not sure if I believe it either. But I do know that idling for long periods builds up soot in the turbo vanes and EGR valve. Then again, I'm not sure if the pound or 2 of boost you get with a high idle would even help that.

Not sure. Bought brand new and I had 170,000 miles on it, not one repair to the engine ever. Never pulled the EGR valve to clean it or anything else, just fluids and filters.
In the winter working on heavy equipment outside you leave the truck running and it would easily idle 3, 4 or more hours at a time. I have even left it running while taking a nap plowing snow in graders.
