I'm looking at an 88 f700 with a 429 4v and a 5 spd with a splitter. It's only got 44k. It's cheap, and will only be driven once a week at the very most, probably half that.
I'm going to use it to towing about 12k. My current f600 has a 330 HD in it. It's in great shape but I'm getting sick of the lack of power.
How will the 429 do? The route I take is rural blacktop, and has a lot of short hills up and down. Will it hold 55? Is the 429 just the next truck I will have before I buy a diesel? The medium duty diesels that would have been offered in this truck would only be rated around 170hp, how would it compare to a 5.9, 6.6 or dt360 in the same truck?
I am considering gas because the truck won't be driven much, low price and miles, and cost of repairs.
I had an F800 with the 429 and a clark 5spd w/2spd rear. Good truck. top spd was 65 loaded with 48,000 lbs. It had air and an air lift tag. Average fuel was 7mpg. Hills were no problem if you used the 2spd rear. It would mantain 45mph up the hills here in western ny and down in pittsburg pa.
As long as it isn't a 370 being passed off as a 429-
The diesel may have a lower rated hp, but they have more torque, and will get better mileage. As an example, I had a well built up 360 in my F250, 4BBL, dual exhausts, towing cam, and advanced cam timing. On paper it should have been 250-260hp, and 310-315ft-lbs of torque. The diesel that replaced it is a 7.3IDI non-turbo, rated at 180hp but 375ft/lbs of torque. The truck accelerates much faster now, and pulls loads up hills much easier. While it is running a different transmission as well, 4th is still 1:1, and being able to hold 55-60 up a long grade vs 45-50 is a win in my book.

And moved like a snail going up any grades !
it worked fine for in town driving !
I came from a 73 F-600 with a 330 hd to my current 429 and it was worth every penny. It should do just fine at 24k. When mine is loaded with 10 ton of rock it is at 34,000 lbs. Coming home from the quarry I have four different 9% grades to pull, and it will pull them in 4th gear with the 2 speed on the low side if I get a good run on it. This puts me at 30 mph at the top of the hills. I am probally at your GVW with a load of logs and I only have to drop either the rearend or the transmission one gear to pull the same hills and can hold 45 mph. I have drove my Uncles F-750 with a 180 hp Cummins the same route with the same load and my truck will pull a grade faster, but his gets much better mileage. I get 5-6 mpg out of my 429. His truck got 11-13 mpg, but like you I do not drive my truck much, so mileage is not much of a concern. If you do decide to get it get a spare ignition module to keep in the truck. Costs about $45 and takes about five min. to change. This will leave you setting some day when it goes out.

I have a old f600 with a 300 6cyl in it and i would not t trade
it for any 429 powered medium duty truck !
That truck tat you are looking at should have air brakes
And they can get expensive to fix and there not realy
needed for pulling, stoping 12,000 trailer, that is if your brakes
are in good working condition and with trailer brakess!
An 88 F-700 could have air brakes, Electric over hydr., or air booster over hydr. depending on what was ordered. I would prefer straight air brakes over the other two. They are actually cheaper to work on than electric (what I have) or air boosted.
The truck we use to have with the
429, 88-89 yr had air brakes and it needed
Them to stop the weight that it pulled .
My ole f600 that has the 300 in has the old
Hydravac system , i am in the middle of switching
It over to a hydraboost system and putting power
Steering on it , been working on it for the last year !
Every one has there own opinions and my opinions are based on my
expereance and my personal likes and dislikes !
The old 429 gas engines were put in the trucks at a time when gas was
Afordable !
I personaly perfer diesel now days cause it opens up the alternative fuel
options , wmo , wvo if things keep going like they are with the economy !
It has hydrolic brakes. It has the big canisters on the lower area of the rear wheels. I'm thinking that means the dreaded Lucas Girling?
The gas trucks are so much cheaper to purchase with low miles. If it's not leaps and bounds better at holding speed than the old 330 I want to go diesel though.
I found a torque rating of 375 compared to 400-420 I have read for the 5.9 cummins.
If it would pull the hills as well as a cummins it may be the right truck for me. I can live with 45 mph hills and would be tickled with 5-7mpg.
The trailer brakes work good. I'm not wanting to repower my old truck because of it's age and what I can purchase a much newer one for.
A 429 will be quite a bit better than your 330. The 330 had 160 hp and the 429 has 235 hp. 5-7 mpg for a 429 might be a bit optimistic. Mine has never gotten over 6, but never under 5. Usually right around 5.5 no matter what I am doing. I bought my 429 for the same reason you are looking at gas. My 73 330 blew and I could pay over half on a new truck for what it would have cost me to repower my 330. I got my 1991 F-800 with 52,000 miles for $3,700 when I bought it. I could not find a diesel in the same shape for less than $7,000. $3,300 will buy a lot of gas, plus I can work on the gasser myself. Not so much if I had bought a diesel.
