Ford best get on the stick with the 4.4L. Deisel Power Mag just released a spread on GM's new 4.5L Duramax that will be put in their 1/2 tons in the '09 model year. 310 horsepower and 520 ft/lbs of torque. This is expected to go up to 340 horsepower and 590 ft/lbs by the time it goes into production. Very interesting looking engine. Come on Ford, the first person with 1/2 ton deisel will gain a big jump on the competition.
I wonder how reliable those 4.5L duramaxes will be? Considering their current 6.6L are only pusing 365HP and 660 ft-lbs of torque. Seems alot considering the much larger one doesn't make all that much more power :-/
Other things being equal, if their 4.5 liter engine puts out 590 foot pounds of torque then their 6.6 should be near 875 foot pounds. So put me down as from Missouri once again
i really don't see the point in offering a diesel in a half ton unless the extra cost of the diesel option is going to be very low. if people really needed that much power (need, not have fun) then they usually are doing some heavy things which then they would get a heavy duty truck anyway.
i see the potential for mpg with a diesel in a half ton, but as i said, only if the option price will make it feasable to buy it for that reason.
the current durmax is a great engine, along with the trannie, to bad the rest of the truck suffers from the bad case of the uglies, but then again, i never liked them after 1987 anyway.
what someone does need is to start offering diesels for suvs, and i am not talking the $45 grand cherokee type either, something offered in the lower scale, like my xterra for one, and also a tahoe size.
I remember reading somewhere that they tried a cat engine I believe and it twisted their frame on the 3/4 ton, figured a little less power on a smaller frame would do similar

They also didn't fit very well under the hood and would have been extremely hard and expensive to work on. Otherwise they would have gone into production and really shaken things up.......

I'll bet you'll see diesels in the Xterra sooner than you think. The Maxima will be getting a diesel for '09. Here's an article that reinforces this logic...

Lets think about this, a 08 1500 chevy with a LQ9 6.0 gaser has a hp rating of 367 and 375 torque, and a max trailer cap of 8500 LBS in a 4x2 setup. The advertised milage is 15 in town and 19 Highway.
Sounds like there over-building a engine. What goods is all that torque if you have a max tow of 8500 lbs. Sounds like another diesel guzzler to me. The only reason for a diesel engine in a half ton to me is fuel milage. Numbers like 250hp and 380 FT/LBS and 22 MPG in town and 28 Highway would be more impressive. Lets hope ford gets this right. Just my .02

That would make way too much sense.
Are you sure they don't have their engines crossed? I read the "new in 2009" 2.9L V-6 will produce 250 hp / 406 ft/lb of torque sounds like their half ton motor. The new V-8 diesel (I'm guessing the new duramax) available in 2009 will produce 330 hp/520 ft/lb. http://www.autonews.com/files/07_ane...entations.html

I read in 4 Wheeler that GM designed it in-house WITHOUT the help of Isuzu. I wonder how reliable that engine is going to be?
