Lightbulb How to remove locking gas cap?

Whats the best way to remove a locking gas cap, I bought 2 new ones to install and didnt realize the rear tank has one on there but I know the key for that cap didn't come with the truck when I bought it, I'll def have to check around in the nuts/bolts pile though, just in case...

Anyway whats the best way to get it off without damaging anything.

Thanks.

Take her to a competent lock smith. Should be able to make you a key for around $20.00.

The key is probably in the ashtray.

If it's plastic, you can pry the cover off and then pop the cylinder out. The plastic types only keep honest people honest. If it's metal, I don't know..

I have punched through a metal cap with a straight screwdriver and used that as a key before

If the key isn't in the ashtray then you may be able to get to the lock tabs from underneath. I don't know if you can see in there well enough to do this but I'd try anyway.
Pull the rubber filler neck hose from the filler tube. With a long screwdriver reach up into the filler tube and release the locking tabs. It might help to have someone pull the cap out as you do this.
I might also be possible to remove the filler neck from the bed to get at the back side of the cap.

I've had two new-to-me vehicles come with a locking gas cap sans key, and in both cases it popped right off with a screwdriver.

Yep, a big screwdriver liberated the one on my '74 F350 tow truck, after which I found the key in the ashtray...

The tread from a 10ply Michelin radial took mine out at about 65mph! Also took out the side of the fender and bent the bed floor.
