Hoping to get some ideas or suggestions from people that have
dealt with this issue before....
I just picked up an 83 for cheap at an auction.
Among the list of "little" problems, both gas tanks have
aftermarket locking gas caps and there is no key for either.
So is there a way to remove them without the key?
(and without destroying the filler neck in the process)
The only way I have seen those taken off without a key is by careful drilling out the center. Unless you want to go to the time and expense of replacing the fillers.
A locksmith would be able to make a key for them. You'd be surprised how talented those guys are.
Another suggestion would be to take a square shanked screwdriver and hammer the tip into the keyhole. Then use a crescent wrench on the shank of the screwdriver to force the lock.
9 chances out of 10 the caps are keyed alike so the locksmith would only charge about half of that. Try all of the keys that you have that will go in to see if you get lucky. I have a key that fits just about all of the caps. I got it from a friend who bought it with his cap. I needed a key for mine after I lost mine. His worked and it only cost me to have a new key made.
