So the hardest part about learning how to work on my truck has been figuring out what in the heck I'm looking at so I can go online and research it. I was under my truck to work on my speedo cable and I noticed a small hole in a cover but I don’t know what its called. The cover is directly behind the oil pan and underneath the motor and tranny it think. What is it called? My truck is a 75 f100 4x4 with at 390 if that helps. I'll try to get pictures as soon as I can.
Also what is the name of the part inside the transmission that drives the speedo cable. I'm not talking about the gear that connects directly to the speedo cable but the one that drives that gear. How hard is that to replace? Should I give it a shot or take it to a transmission person?

Thanks for the help!
Well, the second one is the speedometer drive gear. How difficult it is to replace depends on the transmission you have, on a C6 the gear is not replaceable. Its part of the output shaft.
On the first question, your description is too vague. Are you talking about the inspection cover? Do you see the backside of the flywheel/flexplate through it? A picture is worth a thousand words.
