I purchased an 88 ford F150 from a random dealership the other day.
The speedo wasnt working, so I went under for a look around and found
the cable had been disconnected.
So I hopped online, figured out that it had a 5 speed Mazda M5R2 trans in it.
Year, ect unknown as the sticker is unreadable.
From what I read the speedo cable/gear is supposed to bolt into a hole in the
tailshaft, but the hole is capped internally.
I can run my finger into it, and feel a rounded cap approx 1/2 an inch in.
I've been looking for an answer to this all morning, but have come up short.
Why is it capped ? and how can I get my speedo working ?
Here's a picture of the drive gear (in this case it's green in color) that drives the driven gear on the speedometer cable for a M5R2. The rear differential gear ratio determines the color of the plastic gears/number of teeth.
The tail shaft needs to be removed to install the drive gear. If I recall correctly, the drive gear is held in place by a snap ring and a small steel ball keeps the gear from spinning on the output shaft.
Possibly your trans is from a newer model year truck that had the vss in the rear end and therefore didn't need the speedo hole? If so, you would have to pull the tailshaft housing in order to see what's going on in there.
