speedometer question...

I'm having an issue with the speedometer in my 87 F150 4x2...it has the I6 and the Ford SROD 4-speed manual with OD. For a while, the speedo has been erratic as hell and didn't appear to be accurate, and a few months back, stopped working at all. I pulled the speedo adapter from the transmission and the "driven" gear appears fine...I used a drill on the speedo cable and the speedometer worked fine (my drill goes 40 MPH, BTW...haha).

A kind of weird thing it does, is sometimes if you let off the gas the speedo will shoot up like it's trying to work...then when you hit the gas it drops back to nothing. So something is flexing out of the way when the drivetrain is "under load". Does this mean the shaft the drive gear rides on is worn out? Or just that my drive gear is stripped?

What all has to happen on the SROD to replace the drive gear? Can I remove the tail section of the tranny and get to it? Or is this something the tranny has to come out for?

Thanks in advance guys!

See if you can get a look in the hole the driven goes in. Maybe borrow one of those bendy cams they have now. And most of the driven gears are softer than the driver, so if the driver was stripped something funky happened/is in your tranny. Make sure the driven is staying in the tranny and not popping out/is fully seated to start with.

Alright, I'll see if I can't get a peek in there...I was kinda worried when it worked with the drill and the gear looked ok. Guess I need to hook the drill to the adapter and see if it works through there, to cover my bases...

Thanks bud!

Im not sure about the whole 2wd speedometer cable because in my 4x4 the cable goes into the transfer case. but in my truck the speedo quit working, and a buddy of mine said that in his mustang when the speedo quit working he zip tied the cable so that it was at an angle and it made the speedo work again. I did the same thing to my truck and the speedo works good now. maybe this will help?
