Floor pans - Butt weld or lap ?

Just curious how you guys are/have welding your floor pans in ? I'm getting ready to start mine and was just wondering how the majority of you have done yours.

Well the factory thought it was OK to lap weld them...i have been doing them that way for years with no problems. Use a flange tool if you can and also weld thru primer. Then prime and seam seal and paint when done.
Of course, butt welding might look better....but who is gonna see it?

I have ordered floor pans for the '65, will be doing this shortly.....

I did butt weld.
Welded in, silicone sealed both sides, then primed/undercoat.
But this is my first rodeo also so take with grain salt.

If you overlap it it will probably rust faster. But if it lasts 60 or 70 years, big deal.

I lapped mine as well.Sprayed with weld thru primer as well but it played hell with my mig for making contact. But on the other hand it allowed me to keep the heat mostly on the primered side.Hit it with seam sealer and undercoating and I think I'm good for 40 years.

I made that mistake the first time I used It......trying to actually weld through the primer.
You have to remove the primer from where you actually strike an arc. It will just burn off anyway. It is designed to prime between panels and voids only. It is basically regular primer with a high metal content that won't burn as easy.

butt weld

I have been working on my truck since he 80's.
I am now replacing the lap weld repairs I made 20 or so years ago that I lapped over.
I didn't seam seal or anything but the truck has not been outside or on the road either so I figured I didn't need to.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll lap weld and seam seal. If I get 20 years or so out of them, I will be satisfied. My son will probably be looking for a project of his own by then and I'll be happy to let him re-do them !

I've done both lap and butt weld when replacing floor pans and firewall repairs not sure which I like better butt weld will give you a cleaner look but takes more time to trim the panels just right and fit easy to mess up and have a large gap to fill if you rush. If you lap it be sure to prep the surface between the panels like mentioned above and coat them soon after your done. once I flip my cab over I might weld the bottom side of my lap welds on my floors or try trimming off the extra lap then prep and undercoat it
