It wouldn't make much sense to haul the excavator or the Bobcat home everyday just so the truck wasnt empty would it?

I don't think its going to get any better mpg loaded , do you?

If you really for sure are getting 5 mpg, something is probably wrong.
I don't have a 450, but from what I hear, you should be able to manage around 10 or maybe a bit better.

Your mileage should be in the 10's unless you are on it alot. My 450 is deleted and get 10 - 11 when towing my trailer about 16k and that is running 75. I dont have 4.88 gears any more they are just too deep for most. i have a set of 4.10 and 4.30 gears for mine. I run the 4.30 with a 35" tall tire and I can cruise 80-85 no problem.. keep in mind here we have 80 mph freeways. Deleting it will help your mpg but gears will help more and it will still pull like a freight train. I have had 2 one all stock and one deleted. There is nothing quite like the 08-10 450's Big brakes and lots of power

So reading all this makes me feel a l;ittle better.
There looks like there is some hope to make it a little easier on fuel and be more realiable.

All its going to take is time and money.

What first?

There are a few things you can do.

-To get the RPM's down, you could get new gears put in, which will cost thousands.
-You could install a "gear vendors" overdrive box, which will cost thousands.

After you get the gear ratio a little more to what you need, you can get a tuner, and aftermarket exhaust, which will cost a few thousand. That is, if you don't need to pass emissions.

If it was mine, I'd start with a tuner, and get rid of the DPF so regens are a thing of the past.
I'd look for a new set of gears after.
It sounds like you need the truck mostly as a commuter, but with the capability to tow a big load once in a while, so basically, you want lower gearing so you aren't running such high RPM's all the time.
Doing this, you won't take off as fast with a big load, but unloaded, the engine will run slower, and MPG should increase a bit.

How long are you planning on owning this?
Reason I ask, is that you're talking about thousands of dollars, which is fine if you want to make it run the way you want, but not ideal if you're planning on trading it in a few years.

Personally I would do the gears first. And a gear vendors overdrive is not rated for a f450 so just keep that in mind. The gears will make the truck totally different. You can get any ratio you want for these trucks, I have put in 3.73 in a few. Just up to want you need. I hated driving my truck at 75 and almost 3000 rpm just to hard on the motor not to mention fuel. just my .02

If I was you, I would find someones f350 to test drive; almost the same truck, but you'll see how the different gears feel.

How about scanning the truck first. Get the truck right first and then start thinking about deleting and or mods. Think about you emission laws and what affect that might have on you.
After all you are in Canada.

Find a mechanic with IDS. It is money well spent before doing anything.

I just think he's pretty much admitted he bought the wrong truck.. you can't buy a truck that is built to pull, and work hard all day... and expect to drive it as if it's a Honda civic.. and pull something once a week.. other guys have said the best they we're getting is 10.. I think he's looking for more then that...that's why I went with a f250..deleted it.. I get 13-15 city..which I can live with.. but I knew what I was buying...unfortunately these trucks don't come with gas cards But if he's really only getting 5mpg.. I would have it at a dealer.. no tune or gears can help that

This might be the case ....
But I think it would be more cost effective to do a gear swap, instead of trading it in on another truck.
Provided nothing else is wrong, that is.

Blasphemy ...lol... I do...but then again I don't care about fuel mileage....although mine is getting double (at least) over this one.

The guys are correct, take it in and have it scanned...money well spent!

You guys either cant read or are dense , I didn't buy the freaking thing to haul groceries , take a look at what I haul in some of the remotest parts of BC.

I don't mind buying fuel if Im hauling my excavator or 6 bundles of posts.
.................but I gotta get back and forth from work , I don't have a load both ways .
Im driving over 200 miles a day to work so quit saying I bought the wrong truck, I didn't just fall off a onion truck this POS should be able to do a bit of multi purpose.

The only reason I might have bought the wrong truck is because I guess I should have bought a Dodge or a Duramax..............................

You guys are pulling crap across the Midwest on the flat on the freeway, try pulling what I move , where I move it.

I have 4- 1 tons that are to light that have been doing the job just fine but not legal , that's why I went with the 450, I might as well have bought a semi it would have been cheaper to purchase and could have hauled 4 times as much

cuda ...I know what your saying...like you said your not complaining about mileage...if I were getting 5mpg..i would find the nearest cliff...and push it off.. I was just trying to give a little advice.. but the more this guy talks.. the more it sounds like "you did fall off of an onion truck" lmfao.. You now stated you have 5 total trucks.. but fuel mileage/gas is an issue.. a lot of the stuff you've said...doesn't make since.. so go get your duramax/cummins.. HAVE A GREAT LIFE. This is supposed to be a forum for people who Admire these trucks or have questions.. QUITE A FEW HAVE OFFERED HELP... instead of taking the truck in to be scanned...you "go buy another truck" hmmmmmm...

BAsically the end of it is its the last truck you'd want to buy if fuel mileage is a concern.....Only free thing you can do is slow down on the hwy, keep the rpms down, those 4.88s are killing your mpg. Youve got a sweet "POS" truck that is meant to work, but even for what you tow/haul Im thinking you could go down a notch, ie. 4.33/4.10s or the like.
Then delete the emissions crap, you're in B.C so no worries. I live and work in the same **** you do so I know the terrain, mpg's wont come easy and with a bit of prior to purchasing homework you'd have learned the 6.4 is about the worst modern diesel truck when it comes to mpg.

So, essentially and IMO... The combo of it being a 6.4 + All stock, meaning DPF, EGR crap in place + 4.88s + Speed/rpms is gonna net you awful MPG's.
Good luck sir!
