Today, a new sound started. It sounds like a flashing touching against the drive shaft, at times.
It happens at around 40 or less miles, and is related to the rear end, or so it sounds.
As i decelerate, coasting, then feather the gas lightly, it gets louder then lightens as i release the throttle.
If i coast to a stop, it sounds like a dragging brake shoe. But if i feather the accelerator again, it speeds up even though i am going the same speed.
And then it sometimes stops all together, for a bit.
I have not had it happen over 40 mph, and no noticeable difference in driving, accereration/decelleration beyond noise.
I have noticed a discoloration on the drivers read wheel inside but have owned the truck 3 months and it has not gotten worse.
I will check rear fluids tomorrow and prepare for possible wheel bearings?
I am guessing it is related to your exhaust pipe. Check for loose tin, loose brackets, loose clamps, rub spots on the pipe where it comes close to the frame.
Lots of previous owners will slap on a cheap exhaust kit to make it sound good long enough to get the vehicle sold.
Everything is original, all heat shields appear to be solid. My np205 seals are leaking so maybe thats it? Im going to top it off today and see if it fixes the noise. If not, i will top off the rear diff, check for noise. I really dont want to pull the transfer case or have to do the rear bearings...yet
Its a single drive shaft. And theres no play so im assuming i dont have issues there yet. Incidently, should there be play in the front shaft, that goes from the transfer case to the front diff? Its about 1/4"
I think this truck sat for some time before the PO bought it and had it 5 months. Many seals are starting to fail. The POs only "maintenance" was to pull out all of the interior, carpet, headliner, visors, door panels, firewall insulation dash pad, and throw them away because he got an LMC catalog...

Luckily I'm too cheap to throw much away and I'm WAY too cheap to shop at LMC...
I added 1/2 quart of 80w-90 to the np205 transfer case and 1/4 quart to the Dana 60 rear end. Noise has gone away, i have driven 4 short trips of 15 minutes or so and no issues. We will see...

Did some joker wrap a really long zip-tie around the driveshaft?
Noise still there, actually worse. If i am low on tranny fluid, would it make noise like this? I rapped on the side of the tranny lightly with a wrench, kinda could be the sound...
