And the chiltons says CJ fluid, autozone said dex/merc. Is the book still accurate? Or is autozone correct?

Would it be safe to rule out rod bearings and main bearings, as the sound? The sound is intermittent. Rod and main bearings would be all the time, right?

The engine runs smooth, barely a hitch when warm...

The only other thing I can think of that would make the noise you describe is the flex plate being cracked or warped and rubbing on something or possibly the starter drive being gummed up and not retracting all the way every time.
Maybe you should have the tranny looked at. Possibly a chunk of something in there?
Honestly though, I'm stumped.

Ok, i have spent 2 hours under the truck, shaking, tapping, looking and feeling for anything loose, close, rubbing or touching. I did find, on the drivers side rear, where the parking brake line goes into the wheel is loose. I apply the emergency brake and it tightens, so i am assuming its connected and not just in there rattling. Also, i found 1 wheel stud is apparently pushed in 3/8" (3/8" shorter) would that cause any rubbing? I dont know whats behind there. I finally started it up, and eared the muffler, it has a metallic clinging in it, but the one that i am hearing is more pronounced and idk the word, structured?

And i just recently put the carb jets from #54 to #56, and put the accel pump back to 2( it was on 4) and put the choke back to Rich 3, it was leaned. Would this cause more resonation through the muffler and break worn baffles?

Check the pinion shield on the rear end under the yoke. They can come loose and it sounds like what you're describing.

Would the rear drive shaft sound like that if it wasnt greased? When i bought the truck 2 months ago, thats one of the first things i did. And i remembering that it was odd that the front shaft had a zerk, but the rear didnt...😳....i never even thought to think that it was on top...😁

I greased it and in 10 blocks, no noise

sounds like your muffler bearing is toast.

and you need to do a serious and thorough bolt/grease/fluid check to start eliminating things. be methodical, start out at the brake drums and work your way in, then work forward up the driveshaft and go from there. unfortunately, there is no magic internet answer, and there is no substitute for elbow grease. you never know, you might find another problem you didn't even know you had, and you could prevent a catastrophic failure...

I greased the rear drive shaft Slip Yoke, and i think or am imagining, that the noise stopped. So, when it came back, i looked up under and all the grease was sprayed out onto the bottom of the truck
