I'm trying to learn something about boost. From what I read, higher boost means lower egt's and more complete burning of fuel. What happens if there's too much boost? If you remove the vacuum line from the wastegate, what pressure will override it? What's the downside? I'm slowly aiming toward a under 400hp towing machine that will last, last, last. Is that reasonable? Do I need to stay closer to 300hp for longevity? Do I need to limit my boost? Well, thanks for your attention. Larry
No such thing as too much air - unless you exceed the limit of the turbo (30 PSI for stock) or climb toward the limit of the stock heads/bolts (somewhere over 40 PSI boost). When I had the stock turbo, I just capped off that red pressure line to the wastegate control and I got up to 30 PSI. There is no vacuum on a turbodiesel... except for the separate vacuum pump to control the HVAC and 4x4.
Like any machine... the less you push it, the longer it lasts. I capped my ambition off at 400 HP because that's a healthy power rating, I can dial it down for towing, and I still have a stock-ish truck that any Ford mechanic won't shy away from.
You can have your 400HP truck all day, just don't drive it like it has 400HP and it will last a long time! That is the reason for these multi-position chips with a variety of tunes. You definitely don't want to tow in a high HP setting. Down around 275HP will keep your truck running a long time and keep the EGTs down, but you will have a little more power than stock (which is a lot to begin with). In the HP business, it is tough to have your cake and eat it too (my opinion of course!)

There it is. Your fuel economy will tell you how you treat your truck. As many know, I get respectable fuel economy... so that in itself advertises my driving style with the monster.
