I dropped the pan on my '08 5.4 today to change the filter and found this part laying in the pan. Its about 1 3/4" long and the wide part is about 3/4" diameter. It has a rubber o-ring, looks like some sort of plug. I don't want to put everything back together until I figure out where it goes. Any ideas?
Actually that is the plug used at the factory to keep trash out of the transmission until the dipstick tube is installed.. When the tube is pushed into the trans case the plug just drops into the pan to be removed the first time the pan is off.....
I still chuckle at myself first time I found this laying in a pan---absolutely freaked me out! Changed fluid/filter in a friend's E250 4R70W, was thoroughly convinced it had dropped out of the valve body or some other unknown to me place.
In that case the trans had been replaced under warranty at an unknown interval before he bought the van even at 138K miles the pan had never been removed for any service.
There oughta be a warning or explanation cast into those devils!
I tell people it's a special promotion from Ford. It was dropped into one pan on the assembly line. If it is found and taken to a Ford dealer before (insert date here, always the day BEFORE today) they win a brand new car/truck of their choice!
The transmissions are built in the transmission plant without dipsticks. They are filled with ATF, so this plug keeps the fluid from coming out of the dipstick hole. When the trans is installed in a vehicle the operator shoves the dipstick tube into the hole forcing the plug into the pan where it lies waiting for some unsuspecting person to freak out when they find it.

That's always struck me as quite a funny bit-----wonder if anyone has yet tried to redeem it?

Yeah those of us DIY's not quite so well versed on such things do freak out--most of us are aware how spendy transmission repairs can be!
OOohhhh, last year my friend got taken as a auto shop did a tranny filter and showed him that plug. They said it was from inside the tranny and its going to need rebuilding!!! $2300 later and new tranny........

Holy crap!
I like Mark's idea that its a redeemable token for new free car!
I wonder how many customers have been snookered by such BS?
