Strange object in trans pan

I recently bought a 1972 Ford F250 Camper Special. It is in good shape for its age but it has been neglected maintenance wise.

Today I decided to change the transmission fluid (C6 trans), it was brown in color. Everything was going fine until I dropped the pan, a strange plastic rod with an o-ring fell out.

I looked up exploded assemblies of the C6 transmission and could not find that part in question.

Here is a picture of the object...

Any idea what this is and/or where it goes? I looked everywhere and could not see a place inside the transmission that it would fit.

Also, is there supposed to be a magnet in the bottom of the oil pan?

Thanks in advance.

There were no magnets in pans in 1972. That came later.

The plastic plug is a dipstick tube plug. It's installed at the transmission plant. When the trans is installed in the truck at the assembly plant the dipstick tube is pushed into the hole and the plastic plug falls into the pan. The first time the pan is off it is thrown away.

Thanks for the reply Mark.

Wow, that means this is the first time the oil has been changed since it was built. The trans filter does have the Ford logo stamped on it, so it is probably original as well.

Yup,

The infamous "shipping plug". Unless you have a drain plug on your pan (not original equipment) then chances are...the fluid and filter had never been changed.

Why they (at the factory) chose to knock the shipping plug INTO the pan instead of just discarding it....is beyond me. It has been a source of "concern" for many a person who have never seen one before.

Flint.

Because it saves time. The operator that installs the dipstick just pushes it in. It takes time to pull it out and time costs money.
