I have a '78 4x4 with a 4 speed and a 400 that isn't stock. (180 tooth fly)
The napa starters cant handle the heat or the higher compression of this new engine. I'm on my second one in 3 months.
So what are your thoughts on mini starters? I'm looking at this one right now
Just buy a starter for a 95 F250 with a 460. It's permanent magnet and gear reduction. I'm pretty sure they are cheaper than the aftermarket unit. Is check rockauto, but it doesn't play with my phone. Keep your stock starter relay in the picture; just look up the pmgr starter wiring thread.
PMGR starters are by far superior; I run one on my 300 because it allows me to change it out while keeping the header on. Just be sure to wire it properly, and carefully route and protect the heavy-gauge hot-at-all-times cable that must run down to the starter - especially if exhaust is nearby.
