Yeah, that sounds like a fairly easy fix, i just hope that is the problem. When i was driving to town this morning, the speedometer wasnt working at all , and then started to bounce from15 to 40 mph. It was never registering the right speed

Mine did the same thing, tried the driven gear first, but i wasnt going to get that lucky. there are different tooth counts for those too. what gear ratio do you have?

Your rear end gearing there should be an axle code on the sticker inside the drivers door we can figure the ratio from that, it will make it easier to determine what drive gear you need. the speedo needs 1000revs per mile to read correctly. There are 6,7,and 8 tooth drive gears for the 1356, best to get the correct one, so to figure that out for sure the axle ratio is needed.

The axle code is 39. I think that is a 3:55 ratio

You should have the Wine colored driven gear, which would need a 7 tooth drive gear.

Did you find a solution to your Speedometer problem? I'm having a similar issue with my 2002 F250 diesel. The speedometer might register zero or 105, once in a rare while it will register the correct speed, but usually when I take off, it will immediately jump to 75 and stay there no matter what speed I'm driving.

The ABS light was on, but had that issue addressed. No ABS light now, but Speedo still not working.

All other gauges and lights work just fine. Fuses seem to be all fine. Could it be that the instrument cluster is bad? How would you check this?

your 02 is digital speedometer and computer controlled.
it gets it's signal from a tone ring in the rear axle, with goes to the computer and then to the speedometer head.

If the odometer seems to work correctly and ticks off the miles in proper form. Would that mean then that the speedometer head in the instrument cluster is bad?
