I have a 88 f250 extended cab 4x4 diesel with a manual trans. The speedometer stopped working awhile back and im just getting around to working on it. I pulled the cable out this morning and it wasnt broke and in good shape. Also, i pulled the gear mechanism out of the transfer case. It looked like it was in good shape and worked right. The plastic gear looked good. What have i missed? What else could it be?
check that it hasnt come unplugged from the speedometer, and verify that it is plugged in all the way. I fight this in my 79 all the time, the little clip is broke.
I know the clip your talking about, and yes it,s plugged in all the way. I had trouble putting it back together with that clip, so i just put some wire through the holes. It worked good. I cant figure out why its not turning that cable
The plastic nylon gears in the transfer case could look ok but it could have a small dip in them... Did the needle bounce as it was quiting? And if the gears are fine them the cable could be broken internally... A way to test it is remove the nylon gear put the end of the cable (the part that turns) into a drill and spin it... Can't remember which direction though
You might be on to something there. That gear did have a little dip in it. I thought that was just the way it was made. Can you buy just the plastic gear from the parts house?
Just went out and took it off. It could be worn enough to keep it from catching with the gear in the transfer case. Ill call around and try to find one. Ill keep you posted
both gears are available from the dealer, if i remember correctly they are around $5 each. there is one on the cable, and one in the transfer case. usually it is the one in the t-case that goes bad.
The dealership was out of them morning, but it,ll be here tomarrow. Sure hope it fixes it. The gear was wore some but not that bad.
The one in my 79 was grooved in the middle pretty good, caused me havoc for a while. Between it and the cable coming off the speedo i was about to lose my mind. Swapped a gear out our parts truck and zip tied the cable and been good this far. Well except my speedo says 50 when im doing 70, but other than that good lol
On your bw1356 its not difficult, pull the rear yoke, then 4 bolts and the tail housing can come off. This will expose the gear. there is a spring collar between it and the case, pull it off with your fingers, slide the gear towards the case pull the metal ball out of the shaft that is now visible, then the gear can be slid rearward off the shaft and the new one can go on in reverse order.
