I have an 86 F-250 XLT w/power windows. The rt window motor runs but nothing moves, I took the door panel off but am not sure how to get the regulator detached from the door. It appears it is held on by round push on spring nuts. Has anyone had experience w/removing these things?
They are actually giant pop rivets. If you look you will see some dimples in line with the bolts holding the motor to the regulator. Drill 1/2" holes in these and you will be able to take a 5/16" socket and remove the motor. Before you do this, go to your nearest parts store and look in the "Help" section for the Ford window motor repair kit. Once you have the motor off (be sure to block the window so it can't fall), open it up and replace the gear with the one from the kit. Put it all back together and you're good to go.
Well, in my experience it wasn't the gear but the rubber cushions. Once you get things apart you'll see 3 recesses that are supposed to have rubber buttons in them to cushion things. But they deteriorate, crumble, and fall out. In my case I used short pieces of vacuum hose to replace them. Worked great.
And, I only drilled the rivets 1/4" and used 1/4-20 bolts to put it back together.
Ahhh! Tygon over a dowel. Now I understand. But I still like just a short section of vacuum tubing - soft enough to give but won't turn to dust as the original items did. Anyway, there are lots of ways to skin that cat, many of which appear to work well.
