Question Column Rebuild Questions

Same project from following thread but new questions
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...r-removal.html

Originally I was planning on just putting the 3 back on the tree and refreshing the top end of the column, but after reading some additional info I decided it makes sense to rebuild the whole enchilada while I have it torn apart. Specifically I want to pull the shift leavers so I can refresh the spacers, etc.

I have some great info on the shift and column rebuild (thanks Becky) but can't find anything on getting the steering shaft out. So how do I pull the steering shaft so I can get the shift leavers out?

Also, if I have to go this far, are there any other "should do" rebuild items related to steering while I have it all torn apart?

Thanks as always,
Lance

Please, when asking questions, list ALL the pertinent info. Year, Series, 2WD or 4WD

Assuming 1966 F100 2WD: Notice in parts catalog pic that the steering shaft and flange (#3524) is separate from the gear box.

Lance,

I assume you have the entire steering column assembly out of the truck. If you do not you really need to pull the whole thing to recondition. The numbers in the description below are from the diagram NumberDummy posted.

1.) So the shaft and the flange (#3524 with black diamond) are welded together so has to come out of bottom of column.
2.) Remove horn button or ring, remove large nut, remove steering wheel with a puller (if you do not have a puller - loosen large nut a couple turns and whack backside of steering wheel with rubber mallet to remove). WATCH for horn brushes during these steps so as not to lose.
3.) Remove 3 screws (#3839) and turn signal switch (#13341). Remember to tie a cord to wires of switch so you can pull back thru on assembly)
4.) Remove 2 nuts (#351754) from bolts (#3641) to remove item # 3511.
5.) Remove the roll pin that attaches #7210 to #7228 then remove 7228. You can remove roll pin earlier as well.
6.) Lift the column (#3514) and the shift tube (#3524) as a unit off of the shaft (#3524); actually you could have removed the steering shaft earlier as well, but this sequence is more intuitive upon reversal for assembly.
7.) pull the shift tube assembly (#7212) out of the column (#3514) to free the levers and spacers.

Use the diagram posted by NumberDummy and the link mentioned in the previous thread as aids.

Good Luck

Bill, excellent point. I'll make sure and post all relevant info in the future, thanks for the guidance and the info.

Gavin, Thanks much. I have done most of this (all of the top end steps), but I have not removed the entire column from the truck. Your instructions will be very helpful in completing this. Thanks much for all of the help.

My column seal (part 3513 in the diagram you posted above) is messed up and I can't find a new one anywhere for a 1966 F-100 2WD 240 Standard Cab. I can find seals for '67 all day long. Will the '67 seal work in a '66, or would you happen to know where one is available? Aftermarket is fine.

Lance,

I ordered and used the floor seal at the link below for a 1966 F-100 2WD 3-speed manual column shift:

1969-1976 Ford Pickup Truck Steering Column Floor Seal - Power Steering - Column Or Floor Shift - F100 Thru F350 - MAC's Antique Auto Parts

They list different ones for manual versus power steering. Since I planned on putting P/S in eventually I chose to order the # above and give it a try. At the very top it left a small gap. I cut a piece of bicycle tire tube to cover the gap and used weatherstrip adhesive to bond it to the column floor seal (arranged with overlap like shingles). Looks good and is weather tight.
