Steering column removal - HELP!

Okay guys, I know it shouldn't be this difficult so I must be missing something. How do I remove the steering column from a '66 f250 auto on the column?

The shift rod in the pic is too long and won't go through the opening no matter how I twist and turn the column.

I think you have to remove the steering wheel and pull the shaft through. The lever will come off when you do that. Maybe the whole assembly will come out the bottom once the wheel is removed.

Never would have guessed that's how to remove it. Usually the columns will come out the inside of the vehicle on other cars I've worked on but I will give it a shot. Thanks.

No, you should not have to do it that way. That is a long style (for manual steering box) column. It might require the steering wheel to be removed or the seat to be removed, but sliding the actual shaft out so that you can remove the arm should not be necessary.

You *could* pull the shaft and shift tube. I agree.

But try putting it back together. Speaking from experience. Its not the shaft that holds the shift arm in place, its the shift tube. And if you remove that, you have pretty much taken the whole column apart. Not the end of the world -- but getting it all back together is hard enough on a work bench, let alone doing it in bits and pieces in the truck.....

Thanks cdherman! I have not attempted to take the column apart yet. I removed the cab last night and will work on the column today.

The cab is gutted but the wheel is still on and no matter how I twist or turn, the hole in the firewall doesn't seem to be big enough to get the column and shift bracket through it. Maybe w/o the wheel on it will be easier.

At the end of the column, there appears to be a clamp that possibly holds the end of the shaft on that bolted to the rag joint. Is this part of the shaft removeable?

The clamp on the shaft actually just holds the shaft tight in the shift column. Yes, I think you should remove the steering wheel and then the shaft will slide out. Judging from your level of diassembly, that should be possible.

I am betting at that point you'll be able to get it out. However, the shift lever does not come out with removal of the shaft. The lower shift lever has the inner shift tube (from the top shift lever) inserted through it.

THanks everyone. I removed the steering wheel and the shaft fell out (rather easily I might add) and there was enough room to get the column out.

Christopher, did you have a question or just a bunch of question marks?
Lol

Probably best thing is to start a new thread with whatever question you might have rather than bringing forward a 4 year old thread that may or may not apply to your situation.

The F350, which is one model of truck I have seen you talking about, uses the Gemmer style steering column and box like my 1966 F250 4x4s do. The shaft runs straight into the steering box and can't be removed separately. You have to remove the steering box and shaft as one unit.

Here's a thread with a good picture of the unit from a 1964 F250 4x4

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...e-impaler.html

But, search this 1961-1966 forum for the word "Gemmer" and you can read all about it if you need info on it.

Or start a new thread and ask your question, perhaps.

Once you unbolt everything and remove the floor covers around the column then it should pass up through the floor - box and all.

Don't forget to remove the steering wheel first, too.

I was asking a question about changing my split rims to solid rims and somehow I accidentally asked it on this thread which was unrelated to my question. So I erased the question but the thing said I had to leave a 10 character response. So I stuck question marks in it.

Ya, some people just use 10 dashes in that case.
