Do you want to remove the whole column or just the steering shaft?. If you want to remove the steering shaft you have to take of the steering wheel, disconnect the turn signal switch and disconnect it from the rag joint. And to take the column out there are two bolts on hte bottom of the dash and a clamp on a brace thingie on the fire wall. It should slide right out after you disconnect any shift linkage. Hope this helps.
Well, you haver to disconnect the shift tube from the column. I think two or three bolts hold it on to a piece arond the directional switch. Next pull the shift rod from the column to the trans off. The shift tube should come out the bottom of the steering column, on teh under hood side, if you have already taken the steering shaft out.
Well my dad was just hovering over my sholder and pointed this out to me. You can avoid taking the steering column apart. The piece I called a thingie, it is a brace on the fire wall. My dad says it you take that off the fire wall all you'll have to do to swap columns is take off the steering wheel, directional switch lever, shifter and shift rod at the bottom of the column. Dont take the brace off. You should be able to fit it on. After thinking it over I decided this would be the better, read as easier, approach. Hope this help.
Greg, to pull out the whole column as a unit is fairly straightforward. Where it connects to the box, there's two bolts holding it to the rag joint. The trans linkage can be disconnected from the coumn now. There's also a clamp circling the column holding it to a stamped steel bracket on the firewall side. Power steering and manual steering have different brackets, which are held on with three bolts. Moving inside, there's a flat plate circling the column held to the firewall with four screws. Lastly, there's two bolts holding the column to the bottom of the dash. After unplugging the wiring, it's easy to pull the column out.
It's out. But as usual, I think I tore down the entire column...I got parts all over the place. I'm at that point where you think it will never get back together.
It's probably a good thing. The turn signal return wasn't working well and the horn didn't work.
I think I broke the plastic piece that attaches the horn bar to the steering column. Anybody know where to get one?
