1973 f100 Steering shaft/column HELP !!!!

I have a '73 f100 2WD, 3 speed manual.
I am trying to return the shifting back to three on the tree.
I am having a difficult time getting the shift arms off the bottom end of column so i can replace the thrust washers.

I already have steering wheel and shift tube removed, but I cannot get the steering shaft removed from the column.

It appears that it should come out in the cab as the steering box sits directly below the base of the column.

but I can't get it to budge. Am I missing something very simple?
Any help would be appreciated
Diagrams? Schematics?

I am pretty sure the steering shaft comes out from the bottom of the column (engine compartment end). You need to remove the column from the cab to do it.
Here is an illustration of the exploded column from the Ford parts catalog.
Click on the .pdf link to view.

Thanks for the diagram and the awesome quick response.
Just to be sure, I would have to remove the steering box to allow the column to come out the engine compartment end?

If the steering box is out of the way, and assuming there is enough clearance for the tube to come out in the engine compartment before hitting the frame, is there any other connection of the column toward the steering wheel I need to know about?

If necessary about the steering box I could post a pic that might help a little bit.

It's much easier to pull the column and remove it from the cab than they way your trying to do it.
Pulling the steering gear is a pain strictly because it's heavy and bulky.
To pull the column, disconnect the turn signal wiring harness, remove the pinch bolt that clamps the "rag" joint (basic p/n 3A525) to the steering gear. Disconnect the shift linkage from the shift arms. Remove the clamp and bolts that hold the steering column insulator (basic p/n 3668) to the firewall. Then lastly, remove the two bolts that attach the column to the underside of the dash and slide the column out through the cab.

Thanks for the help again.
I definately don't want to make the simple complex.
The turn signal wiring, steering wheel, and shift tube are already out.
The linkage to the transmission is disconnected at the tranny, but still connected at the shift/ column base end.

Part No. 3A525 is disconnected from part no. 3524.
Is part no. 3524 the end of the steering shaft column, or is that part supposed to separate from the steering shaft tube?

When I pull the steering shaft does the shift arms come thru the firewall with the shaft?

Part no. 3524 is all one piece with the steering shaft. Disconnect the shift rods from the shift arms.
The shift arms come through the firewall along with the rest of the column. Thats the reason for p/n 3668. That's a cover for the hole in the firewall that's big enough for the arms to pass through.

I was hoping you would tell me that is how it would work.
I have some junkyard pics somewhere to help me visualize the size of that hole in the firewall, just couldn't find them last night.

Thanks for the help, I will post a follow up hopefully next weekend.
I ordered some more parts from LMC, should be able to get after it again next weekend.

Here is my '73 projects firewall. it shows the size of the hole for the column.
Notice the steering gear is still in place.

It came out very easy after following your advice.
On to the next step, evaluating what i have before putting back together.
Thanks for the help. More than likely i will end up with a follow up question on reassembly.

I saw another discussion about the shift arm bushings on here, I believe numberdummy posted part no EOSZ-7341-B is that I believe I need.

I have brown bushings, they are not in the greatest shape. Is there a final answer as to where to find these? Is the dealer still an option? I saw a reference to a website that I believe has since disappeared.

Actually the part number is E "zero"sz, not EOSZ. This is a real common problem with Ford part numbers whenever the year identifier is "0".
I searched both ways ( a little "trick" I learned from Numberdummy, thanks Bill).
E0SZ-7341-B
Wesley Obsolete Parts, Liberty, KY has 1 (606) 787-5293
Moore Ford, Williamson, WV has 3 (304) 235-4931
Anderson Ford Sales, Bellefontaine, OH has 4 (937) 592-6010

Listed as EOSZ
Gene Evans Team Ford, Union City, GA has 7 (770) 964-9801
Pioneer Ford-Mercury, Bremen, GA has 3 (770) 537-2373

There are more out there. If you need additional contacts let me know.

That all depends...Mike...especially in this case!

This is a real common problem with Ford part numbers whenever the year identifier is "0". I searched both ways (a little "trick" I learned from Numberdummy).
O-S-I (Obsolete-Supercede-Interchange) Catalog sez: EOSZ-7341-B replaced: D5AZ-7341-A, B & C; D4OZ-7341-A; C9TZ-7341-A; C8OZ-7341-A; C7SZ-7341-A.

While E0SZ is what is listed in the Car/Truck parts catalogs, most Ford parts peeps pronounce it as an O .. including yours truely.

And because it's usually pronounced as an O...

If E0SZ-7341-B is typed into the Ford Dealer Parts Locator System...guess what? Obsolete because no Ford parts depot shows any.

Now type EOSZ-7341-B into the system and guess what? Available from Ford / MSRP: $3.41 each.

Ford parts depots have 751 of the little darlin's in stock. 50 + FoMoCo Dealers have 300 + more.

So, whenever typing a part number prefix that has a 0 as the 2nd digit, also type it as an O, because...

You never know how it was typed into the Ford and PV locator systems originally.

rusty d shackleford: What NC city/town do you live in? I'll list the closest sources.

Thanks

There's too many available across the US. The dealer locator only shows 50 listings, but that depends on where the dealer is located that is searching for a part.

Since I'm using the dealer locator from CA, I can only get 50 listings from CA, OR and WA

Another parts locator website I use lists 131 sources across the US for EOSZ-7341-B

The closest source to you is: CAPITAL FORD in Wilmington NC has ONE = 910-442-2645.

But, you can order it from your local dealer, these come in a package of three.

And, it's possible your local dealer may have it, since I can only get sources from the west coast off the dealer locator.
