Finished up the second head. After lapping the valves I did a quick pressure test. I used soapy water, sprayed on each valve, cover exhaust outlet with my hand and put compressed air on the EBPS port. I got some bubbles out of a couple of the exhaust valves. Is this ok? Do they have to be 100% sealed after lapping? I get a similar result on the intake side also. Should I lap them some more?
After lapping I checked and had good thick land all the way around the valves and the seats. The machine shop that bored the block said new valve were needed but not seats. A friend who rebuilds engines says lap every new valve no matter what. I don't know what to do other than these 2 things. Is there more than 1 step to lapping? Leaks are very small but I can see them.
Sorry, have not got anything new done. Sick kids for a week, then my turn spent whole weekend in bed and not for the good reasons.
I have been researching how to prelube the engine before first start up. My best guess so far is to try and fill all the passages with oil before final assembly. I can fill oil pump through oil cooler hole, fill oil cooler and filter, fill oil passages from turbo supply holes, fill hpop oil passages in heads and finnaly fill the hpop reservoir. Any other sugestions?
Also once I start it up the first time what should the process be for new rings and bearings? Idle until warm, then shut off? How soon should I change the oil the first time?
Wow, has it really been a month and a half!! Life keeps getting in the way. I have not completed anything worth mentoning on this project. I see it almost every day as I pass through the garage. I did pick up a 2 ton engine hoise for $100 and a heavy duty engine stand for $60, now i don't have to borrow them. As soon as this one is done I have to fix the minivan engine, all the coolant has made its way into the oil. Have not found the cause yet.
Still moving very slowly on this project. Did a little work over the break and ran into an issue. I found one of the new exhaust valves has a small defect in the center, see pic.
Have you ever seen this before, is it acceptable? I assume it is not good and am trying to contact the vendor to have it replaced.
Other than this I am trying to find out if the heads should have 2 locating dowls or just 1. Right now each head has 1 locating dowl and when I place the heads on the block the head moves quite a bit even with the head bolds in loose. Do I need 2 dowls or is 1 the correct number?
Unfortunately I don't have access to my OEM shop manual right now. I may be able to get it later in the week, then if no one provides your answer, I will take a look in the manual for the number of dowel pins and respond. Good luck!
