First off HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET THE ENGINE OUT? I do not beleive that it is possilbe to remove the engine without raising the body. Now I need to disconnect more stuff to raise the body so I can remove the engine. The engine hoist does no good because it is too tall and does not have any room to lift the engine.
Second, what is the point of new valve springs? If one were staying with the stock rev limiter and cam do heavier springs do any good?
Without including all the pages that deal with accessory disconnection, it looks like you raise the engine, disconnect the motor mounts, lower the engine, disconnect and support the transmission, attach the cherry picker and pull the engine out. See attached pdf.
As I stated earlier, Chris Steuber owner of www.ujointoffroad.com(a 4x4 van converter) just did this and is posting a thread at:
Otherwise, I was hoping you could tell me how to get the engine out.
Believe it or not, it took a lot more time to scan the attached pages than it would seem, so when you are able please reciprocate by posting removal tips and pictures and post-mortem piston, etc. pictures. I am really looking forward to seeing what you do and how you do it, because it is likely that your path will be in my future and the future of the few other 7.3 van guys here at FTE.
Get some sleep and hit it fresh in the morning. And Good Luck!
Wow, this information is taking me a whole different direction on engine removal. I have put together some hand sketches and should be building a removal jig today during lunch. All of the sudden this project seems doable.
GOT IT!!! Engine is out, heads are off, started the teardown process. Now I need to get a manual so I know what I am doing. I have pictures of the engine on the hoist but I can't post pics yet. I did not have to raise the cab or even unbolt it. Nothing tricky about the removal, just common sense stuff.
Where is the best place to get a manual so I can put this thing back together right?
Found this one on Amazon. My haynes manual has some info on the 7.3, but it doesn't go much further than torque specs and such. Maybe your local library has something you can check out.
Thanks for the manual information guys. Just a few more posts and I can upload the photos of the teardown.
Now that the engine is out I have to figure out how to handle it in the garage. No overhead lift and engine is being held by hoist, have to roll it over somehow to remove oil pan and bottom end. There are not many inexpensive stands that will hold up to the weight of the Powerstroke.
Well the engine is all tore down. Block is stripped and cleaned, ready for the machine shop. Manual is on order. Now I need to put together my wish list for RiffRaff so when I order my engine kit I will know what else to order. For now I am looking at a fuel bowl o-ring kit, intake plenum reinforcing inserts, AIH plug, and CCV o-rings. I think that I need a turbo rebuild kit because I have a small amout of side to side play and oil leaks through the shaft seal when I pressurize the oil passages. I am not going to do any upgrades because this truck will only be driven a few hundred miles a year and I just want reliable for now.
I borrowed an engine stand but only used it for the short block because I do not think it will hold up a long block.
