I dont think its contacting the crank pulley. Look at the c frame he made with the ears on the outside kinda in the vicinity of the ground bolt holes on the front of the block.

That is the correct answer. There are pieces of angle bolted to the block at the location of the grounding bolt on one side and the fuel line hold down bolt on the other side. Then the angles are bolted to the c-frame of the adapter. This is what holds the weight of the block and allows it to rotate. The chain and turnbucle are what control the angle of the block.
Next photo.

This is the adapter I used, just like the web sit showed. I ordered the npt to M10 oring from the hydraulic store and bought the hose from Harbor Freight. As you can see I have an extra hose and can go next door to order another adapter is someone is in need.

Driver side valve cover removed.

Passenger side valve cover removed.

As you can see there is a lot more room on the driver side, but it is possible to get the vavle cover off both sides in a van body. Sorry I did not try to remove an injector from the passenger side before I remove the engine, but it did complete a compression test on all 8 holes with my adapter.

Look at all that room! You could almost fit a midget in there!

Thanks for the photos!

Hmmm... Sketches are still required when you get time. Because I am easily confused not experienced enough to understand what I am seeing and what you and Chris said.

(I guess it is up to me to let you know if the injectors on the passenger side are removable without lifting the body.)

I know the van bodies are not that popular but this thread sure dies fast. The engine rebuild part would apply equally to the trucks, oh well.
As for the sketch, I can only do it at work so I may get to it over lunch.
I ordered all the parts I need from RIFFRAFF last night. They got the package out last night but UPS says delivery Wednesday, bummer. Was not planning on machined pistons but that was all Clay had in stock so I ordered them. Machine shop did a pre-bore and found the score was so deep I need .030 over pistons. That is a pretty significat score. Maybe I will get a picture of the piston tonight.

This thread isnt dead man...
But all threads take naps at some point.

This is usually how it goes...
More activity will happen when more about the build gets posted...
Pictures tend to drum up a good bit of activity...
The gnarlier the better.

Thanks for the pick me up. So for all of your help I give you the hoist adapter. Please let me know if you want more dimension or descriptions. I can get more pics when the block returns. The tubing sizes can be adjusted to what you have on hand and to what the size of your engine hoist tube is, just remember you are lifting a 900+# engine block.

Uhhh...

Dude you get an A+!

I do some (crappy) welding, but that is within my capabilities. Very cool! Thank you for going where no van guy has posted before.

Yah... a shortblock might be around 900#...
A dressed longblock is closer to 1200#

Neat design. Reps deserved and sent!

Thought I might show the damage. Cylinder #4, bottom side. Sorry about the junk on the piston, just something that fell in when the head was removed. This picture was when the engine was still in the truck.

Piston #4. Broken top ring, bent ring lip below top ring. Sorry the photo is not very clear. May get better pic later. And second ring and oil ring are stuck in piston. All other pistons had loose rings when they came out of the block.
