97 Died and No Start

Truck is a 97 250 5 speed with 220k miles. I have no history on it. Running down the road and the truck just died running 60mph. Pulled over and tried to start. Nothing. Not showin any base oil pressure on the dash gauge. Unplugged the ICP and tried with no luck. Get a pull to my buddies shop to take a closer look. So here is where I'm at with it.

*I have a tach reading when I crank (guess I can rule out CPS or can I?)
*I have a "Wait to Start" light.
*HPOP reservoir has oil in it.
*Fuel pressure while cranking is 45-50 psi (pump was replaced by previous owner a month ago.) I can get a slight hint of fuel out of the exhaust.
*Only stored code is a p0603 internal Kam code (don't think it's an issue)
*Injectors buzz great during buzz test.
*Fuse #22 looks great.
*While cranking, IPR% goes to 55 on one crank series. The next one it stayed 15%.
*ICP stays at 0 psi.

With all this info, am I looking at just an IPR replacement or HPOP or both?

Any smoke out of the tailpipe while cranking? There have been instances where the cps was out and the tach still read, but I don't think that's the problem. That 0603 code could be from the batts being unhooked if you have done that recently.

I'm gonna guess the ipr is stuck, but lets see what others have to say.

Thanks for the reply. With the IPRs on the 7.3s, does cleaning them always alleviate issues or is it hit and miss?

Can you get a high pressure oil reading ? You have oil in your HPOP , so I guess your oil level is correct . I'm with Fordman , I do not think the cam sensor is the issue , But ... for the price I would put in a new one from Ford or IH . Just for grinns .Also ck your icp sensor plug for leaking . You would expect a code , but sometimes you don't get that lucky .

Cleaning the ipr is hit and miss at best on these. I'd pull it and shake it, iirc you should be able to hear it "rattle" if its not stuck.

If you have access to a high pressure gauge, you could put it on the hpop and on each head to see if you're building pressure

Update!

Took IPR out today and took it apart and cleaned it real good. Reinstalled the IPR, primed the HP oil and fuel system and she lit right off. Hope this helps someone doing a google search because it seemed like every thread that I found would post similar issues like mine but would never post up what was the fix. Thanks to all replies.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. Like I said before though, the ipr cleaning can be hit and miss at best, but I guess you know now if it happens again where to begin.
