Injector Pressure

I have a 97 f250 that died after warm up and hasn't started since. Took off ICP sensor and have oil coming out but not shooting out that far. Could the Hpop be bad or the IPR valve? How do I check this without a fancy diagnostic tool or do I just have to take it to a shop. I have had this truck die on me in the past and just randomly start working again. Have changed the cps several times and no go. Has fuel coming into fuel bowl. My first diesel and it is driving me nuts!

HPOP usually don't just die

Leaking ICP, disconnect the connector and try starting as it will use default values

Does HPOP reservoir have oil in it? does dash oil pressure gauge move when cranking?

Do you have a BT scanner?

I use the one listed half way down this page and also a listed the no start chart you should print out to assist you

If you disconnected the ICP and have oil coming through the sensor then I would start there. Like knottyrope suggested, try to start with ICP disconnected as the IPR and HPOP are not the usual suspects, but check wiring to the IPR and that you don't have leaky fittings at the HPOP.

The TorquePro app is great along with a bluetooth ODBII dongle to monitor ICP pressures while cranking. Can get both for around $30. Lot of info on TorquePro here on the forum.

I have to disagree. I have seen 2in the last year just die.
Byron and my brothers.

The BT app is very useful for diag to rule hpop system out or suspect. Otherwise most rapairs are just a shot in the dark.

Yes I read about BlackBerry sliders failure. Don't remember yours but generally they don't fail all of a sudden which makes a failed one tough to figure out at times.

Icp connector was dry no oil. Took the sensor itself out and did have some oil pressure there. But not sure how much should be there. Truck has over 300000 miles on it. Runs great when it runs.

There should be a lot of oil coming out of the hole where the icp was if you took it out and cranked it. It should be around 550 psi, give or take. A more common failure than the hpop is the ipr, I'd be looking there first.

Yes, I misread that about the ICP connector. Like 427 Fordman said there is 550 psi needed to start in the oil rail that the ICP screws into. Hard to diagnose until you can see what is going on inside.

ok. hpop reservoir does have oil. Got the torque pro app and dongle says ecu wont let it read PIDS. What does that mean? do I need more to this app. When cranking rpms do register but have no idea how to get the icp sensor and other stuff to show up. any suggestions?

Tugly has been a great source of info for me when I first became aware of the Torquepro app for android smartphones.

This link below discusses all the options for reading data available from the OBDII port. The portion on TorquePro starts on post #4. I paid about $5 for the app and another $20ish for the BT dongle that connects to the OBDII port.

This second link goes into more detail about the Torqupro PIDs needed to monitor Ford diesel specific sensors and how to set them up correctly.

Mine will always say there is a problem with my ECU, but I ignore it. I do have a chip, but it reads everything I need with no issues.

You need to install the predefined PIDs for Ford. Go to the settings menu then click on the 'manage extra PIDs/Sensors" link. From that page click on the 3 vertical dots to the left of the page title. This will give you a drop down menu and click on "Add predefined set". From there click on "Ford (Incl Powerstroke)". That will add all the needed PIDs to your torquepro app. Then you can add gauges on your real time info display to show ICP pressure and duty cycle along with others that you want displayed.

Took me a while to get my setup where I wanted it, but this forum has been a huge help with Tugly's help.
