So i have my turbo issues fixed and life is good engine wise... but now when i try to put the truck into gear the rpms drop like its going into gear but the truck wont move at all doesn't matter what gear i put it in or anything no movement. After trying to put it in a gear if i go back to park i get a grinding type noise. it almost sounds like a pinging noise like running a piece of metal across something ribbed its a hard noise to explain. but after it makes this noise it pops into park it almost sounds like its trying to slow its self down. i'm at a loss there is no grinding when i put it into any gear what so ever just when i put it into park.
A little back ground on the tranny i got the drive line out of a donor truck (roll over) that was rolled over when i got it from the guy he brought it to me on a trailer then drove it up the driveway and it was fine went into reverse and all the gears with no issues. i pulled the tranny out of the truck and it spent a couple of months on the floor in the garage while i put the truck together. before putting it in i pulled the pan changed the filter and drained all the fluid and replaced it. I've added an aftermarket tranny cooler to the truck aswell and it sits above the tranny in the grill. Now i'm having issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated if i can get it moving ill be able to drive it down the road and its killing me to have her running and not be able to drive her. Thanks in advance.
The transfer case is either in neutral or it is broken. The transmission is engaging, the transfer case isn't moving the torque to the wheels. The big clue is the grinding noise. That's the park pawl ratcheting on the park gear.
It sounds stupid but would it matter if the tcase is from a manual gas engine? it was in better condition then the one that came off the donor so i used it the one off the donor was leaking and had alot of slop in the chain so it got ditched. i didn't think about the tcase being in neutral i don't have the shift lever in it yet so ill have to double check that. I'm 99% positive its not the tcase i used it in the truck when it was behind the gas engine and it worked flawlessly unless there's something special about the diesel tcases and i snapped it on start up?
I'm betting the shifter arm for the transfer case is is a different length between the two that you have there. You probably need to swap them out so you can get it shifted correctly.
After it grinds it does make a pop sound and goes into park. I kept the other shift arm for the tcase just in case I don't even have it hooked up yet to be honest I just wanted to move the truck back and forth down the drive way to check everything.
Yeah the shift arms may be two different lengths. If all you want to do is to move the truck you can probably shift the T-case by hand or shift it into another notch to get 4HI or 4LO. The arms being different lengths screws up the position of the shifts.
