posted this as a reply to another post, but i am in need of some assistance.
i let someone drive my truck yesterday, 93 7.3 IDI 5 SPD. he pulled into traffic, and there was a loud pop, and grind sound, now it is making poping and grinding in any gear. i know it isnt the tranny, as i placed the t-case in neutral, and ran through the gears, with no noise. i put the t-case back in 2wd and drove forward and backwards in the drive way, and the noise was present. i think the t-case might have shelled, but before i go through the pain of pulling it off, i was looking for someone elses opinion.
am i off base here?
could be u-joints but if it is from the transfer case you have probbily slipped the chain drive. but need to know which transfer case you have to help more.
could this have happened from him merging into high speed traffic from 1st gear (overreving)? i forgot to tell him about starting in 2nd, since he is the one who drove it home when my wife bought it for me in Feb while i was deployed
