Killed my PCM..

Picked up a TW 6 position chip from a previous owner of my truck. Strange coincidence, anyway I went to install it tonight and pulled the pcm, cleaned up the contacts and plugged in the chip and tried it before re-assembling everything. High idle etc all seemed to work fine so I installed the pcm and ran the wiring up to the a-pillar, started the truck up and the high idle wasn't working.

I could switch through all positions and it seemed to be working right excedpt no high idle so I thought maybe the plug became dislodged while I was installing it or running the wires. Removed the park brake and the plug was fully seated in the pcm. started it up a few times wiggling connections between starts then on the 3rd or 4th try the truck started up and died then would not restart.

Tried removing the chip, fuses are all good, removed and re-installed the pcm connector, no wts light, cel is on, and scanner can not communicate with the computer.

Did this chip kill my PCM? Where is a reputable place to buy another one?

It sounds like it very well could have fried the PCM. The no WTS light and unable to communicate with the PCM are tell tale signs of fried PCM's if the fuse is not blown. Wiggling the chip/connections with the key in the ignition is usually what causes it.

You can get them from auto parts stores, Ford, or search the classifieds on these forums.

Yes, there is WARNING in the instructions chip installation, that says something like this: KEEP your keys OUT (in your pocket, trunck, rear seat, etc) of the ignition switch when install the chip in the PCM

Question

Well I guess I am looking for a used one. parts stores have nothing available, all back ordered. Diesel shops say to check ebay they don't even have a source for them.

I had a 99 7.3 at work for a while and the chip used to come loose regularily but I just had to wiggle it and the truck would start right up, never wrecked anything.

Maybe you have been a lucky man, Id put a TAPE over the chip to fix it very well, with the keys in my pocket.

You could try sending the unit to Python Injection and see if it can be repaired. Good outfit. Might be worth a try.

Well after arguing with a guy at the autowrecker today for 15 mins I got him to sell me a rebuilt/reflashed PCM from a 97 auto for $100. Employee there sent it out and the truck got wrecked before it came back. Truck runs fine, cruise still works too.

Gonna send the T&S chip out to someone to have it check and probably some new tunes before I try it again.

It is possible you cleaned the contacts on the PCM to much and this is causing problems. Don't ask me how I know, LOL

Can PCMs be swapped like IDMs can...meaning the newer/higher voltage the better? Or if a spare PCM is being hunted what needs to be the same....auto/manual trans I suspect is mandatory. Same year?

Pull yours and get the numbers on it and try to match them up. I think the auto, manuel thing is most important. The higher voltage IDM's are a little better for better throttle response.

The chip was working fine with the pcm loose on the fender, when I installed it the wiring connector came loose from the circuit board but wasnt off completely. Chip was secured with a couple pieces of duct tape so it didnt move at all.

So far the 1997 auto pcm is workin fine with my 1994 5spd. Havent tried the chip again...
