Computer Info

I recently purchased a 1999 f250 powerstroke and while installing my CB radio i noticed a Computer looking thing near the emergency break and it seemed to be cut into and ducktaped. First off What is this computer for. And why would it be hacked into and ducktaped. I am new to Diesel trucks, any help appreciated.

Behind the e-brake is the PCM. The PCM is encased in a plastic shell. A chip plugs in right there. If the casing has been cut open, it's to allow easier access to the chip without having to remove the PCM every time.

I did something similar to my chip. I cut the plastic around the PCM so I could pull the chip without the hassle of removing the PCM (I do my own tuning, so I'm constantly updating tunes and reburning the chip). I also mounted some velcro to hold the chip in place so it doesn't accidentally pop out, and also so I don't have to re-tape it in place every time.

You can remove the chip to see what is installed. Just make sure the keys are NOT in the ignition when you remove the chip. If the keys are in the ignition when you pop the chip off, you can fry the PCM. No need to unhook the batteries or do anything else special, just keep the keys in your pocket and not in the ignition. Pull the chip and tell us what you've got.

thanks for the information. I have not looked at it yet, spent all day working on my buddys 96 powerstroke. It did not seem like it had anything pluged in anymore, is there a way of telling what was pluged in it.

If it was removed, then there's no way of knowing.
