Hey guys, I need some HELP! I have a 2005 F-150 5.4 Supercrew. The truck is at 189,000 miles, I bought it barely over a year ago at 120,000. I have had basically ZERO problems with this truck, expect the timing chain rattle, and having to do a tune up, its first tune up at 175,000.
The trans problem- I don't know if the tranny has ever been serviced in this thing. The truck was in excellent shape when I bought it, but I've gave it heck and not serviced it well. I have not changed the fluid or filter (usually I'm a service ****, but as you can tell by the miles I've been busy). Today I was hauling my gator on a 20' bumper pull and all of a sudden over drive bit the dust just as if you had put it in neutral. Now it fails to hold back in second also, and whether you let it shift normally, or get it up to about 65 and hit the button to go in overdrive, it just rev's out and does nothing.
Through research I have learned that it could be the overdrive servo snap ring??? Is this common? The part is like $3.00.
Next question: Is this something I can do myself??? I've never dug into a trans, but right now I want to try it rather than pay a shop because I don't trust local trans shops, and because all my other stuff seems to have decided to tear up at the same time and I've spent too many thousands lately on weird repairs to trailers, mowers, tractors, ect.
I can pull tractor fuel pumps, work on FPR, injectors, valve cover wiring harnesses on 7.3's, glowplugs, u-joints, worked on 4x4 on several trucks, and torn into my excavator engine successfully, hydraulics, as well as a ton of other stuff on equipment. BUT- a tranny makes me nervous because I know it must be RIGHT, no exceptions.
How long will this proposed job take me if things go fairly smooth? I have a shop with about $5,000 worth of tools I bought off my brother who is a former semi mechanic.
Thats what the tow/haul button is for my neighbor learned the hard way 2000 for a new tranny
Not to be a smart alec, but check my sig. I do a little towing, I know what the button is for. I was on a level spot running 80 on the highway.
I tend to have good luck out of trannys, with over 250,0000 on 5 different powerstrokes, a stock f250 tranny usually lasts me 160k ish towing all the time

Ojai150, thanks for the info!
I ad my snap ring go out at 90,000 and had never towed anything,
Good news! I swung by one of the repair shops I use to pay for some bearings on my 32' trailer, and had the guy read the codes, my tranny is electronically perfect, no slippage either, diagnosis is definitely the broken snap ring. He has experience on replacing them, and quoted me $150-175 for fixing the ring, and changing fluid and filter! I'm happy, it's going Monday to him. I'd be better off spending the time running my own business than trying to play mechanic. Happy!
