You don't have to drive with OD off with the trans you have, unless there is something wrong with the trans. Tell us more about the issue.
well, when I haul my fifth wheel, 12k, I run with it off. Ford service manager said I needed to do this as well as the Edge chip rep. (after the fact by the way) I did not do this first 4 or 5 times I towed and a couple of trips into the mountains and it was fried. Had to replace it with a rebuilt from Ford. I posted in a earlier thread about it giving me some problems again. When I spoke with Brian at BTS a month ago, he said that if I made some modifications that I would not have to take the OD off. I assume that means on his tranny that I would be able to leave it on as well. I would also assume that the truck would not act like it was looking for the next gear as it does now. Thanks for repling
When I first got my 02 after towing w/ a gas motor I didnt know how to use the pedal w/ a light but steady pressure when pulling hills. I had a lot of problems with downshifting in od. try going a little easier on the go pedal when pulling hills, just steady pressure on it , dont mash it to the floor. You may already know this but it took me 4 or 5 good long trips b4 I learned how to pull hills & try to watch the rpm & keep them around 2-2300 k. May not be going 65 - 70 at top of hill but your trans will thank you for it. On bigger hills I may only be going 50-55 mph but I get there & all runs cool. Towing in od ,as said is normally not a problem, moreso with a BTS trans as it is built much stronger that stock Ford trans. - Good Luck & welcome to the forum!
How heavy a trailer and what kind of terrain? I tow throughout the west with a 36' fiver and I never turn the overdrive off (except going down big mountain passes)...but I have supplemental cooling and a JW transmission.
Sounds like you need a trans. If you don't have an after market cooler or I use 6.0L TC your trans just gets to hot. 12K is around what most people pull with a toy hauler and as long as you trans isn't trying to find gears all the time OD is okay. Up tall hills most I believe take it out of OD so it doesn't look for gears. BTS & JW trans our both great trans. I have a JW because i'm in CA. I also put the 6.0 TC in at the same time. Temps our way down now. I believe BTS want that cooler installed for his warranty if your stock. Chet
Did you get the ford HR trans, it has a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty if you did.
