Well, I have had this truck all of one week. Last night, I was on the highway lightly accelerating up to 55 mph. There was no load and on level ground. The trans tried to shift into overdrive and I heard/felt what I thought might be some grinding. I let off and there was a very slight clicking. I went ahead and pulled over, got out inspected, checked fluids, etc. Found nothing and began wondering if I was imagining things. Decided that if I wasn't, something should happen under acceleration.Sure enough shifting into od, it seemed to hesitate for a moment and then BAM! The whole truck shuddered. No od or 3rd. I limped back home in 2nd. Any ideas or suggestions. I want to replace it with a tranny that I won't have to worry about. The truck is stock right now. How much $ are we looking at? Thanks!
Welcome to FTE Crash. I would be raising some hell at the dealership where you purchased it. Aside from that, the money your going to spend on another tranny could be put into that one and have a bullet proof tranny capable of handling anything. The 4R100 is a good tranny. Sounds like you just got one that wasn't taken care of.
Thanks for the reply! Just scanning it seemed like the BTS and Pro-Lok were just rebuilt bulletproofs. I don't know squat about these things though. Who and how would I have this thing rebuilt? Seems like most of the tranny shops around here are hacks. I just don't want to have to keep worrying about the tranny. Thanks, Alan
As far as why you don't have od or 3rd your gonna have to take it to a shop. I'm no tranny tech. The upgrades I did are a larger cooler frm B&M,inline filter{magnetic preferably},manual valve body and an aftermarket pan from Western Diesel. Mag Hytech is good too. My tranny supports 548 r.w.h.p and regular 15 plus on a 30' gooseneck. No problems and it's only gotten hot once. That was my fault for lead footin' it back from Ca. Oh, get a guage for it. That will give you a heads up on exactly what it's doing. I use Autometer. There are literally hundreds out there to choose from that do just as good. Good luck.
All right, I am having the tranny rebuilt as we speak. They have taken it out and opened it. The guy confirmed what I had said when I told him it felt like the whole thing had grenaded. He said that it looks like a grenade went off in there. Said he had never seen anything like it. Also, gave everything a good inspection and can't find anything that caused it. Said that there is nothing recognizable left and that he is surprised that it didn't throw it through the case. Ironically, this thing drove perfectly and was given the "good-to-go" by two seperate mechanics before I bought it a little over a week ago. Said he couldn't comment on wear by previous owner as it was too damaged. Fluid was not burn't or darkened but had many particles suspended. Seems the tranny guys are just as puzzled as I am. I know nothing about trannys, but did ask him to build this thing back to be stronger than the stock. I don't want to do this every 6 months to a year. Oh yeah, no codes thrown.
Ive got a 96 with an E4OD that I just found out needs to be rebuilt . I posted a while back , about a week ago . Any way , fluid is pretty clean , no codes ( although I was told that the buss for down loading had a blown fuse and no codes would have been kept ?) But it did have a magnet wearing a fur coat in the pan . The shift into over drive seamed to be delayed and the converter seamed to be delayed in lock up . And it would not shift with any consistancey . Other than that it worked pretty good . I did get a reply that some one had the same symptoms and it went down hill pretty quick . Good luck .
have my truck back. sems to be all right. trans shop does warranty work for local ford dealership. i have to take it back to be flashed. i have older programming and it causes the tc to remain locked. this wears the clutches a lot. if you are experiencing delayed shift, ease out of the accelerator as it is shifting. This will lessen the load on the clutches as it does eventually shift. Ford says the clutches can slip like that for 6 seconds before seizing. Mine lasted about 2 and a half. Anyway, when all this went haywire I was actually in 3 and OD at the same time. This grenaded both. I saw the bits and pieces of my tranny. It was not pretty. Ironic that Ford's programming seems to be the cause of my tranny's early demise. be careful if you are getting delayed shifts. it could happen the first time it slips or any other time. just sharing what i was told.
