WOW!!! Sorry gentlemen my question was very simply if you thought you needed to keep your trans cooler why a $300 6.0 cooler and not a add on from the parts store.
I have 373k on my stock truck (e99 350) I dont tow all the time but do have trailers and campers I pull it is a DD but I live in the Dallas TX area and was just looking to get some longevity out of what I have. The answer I came up with is get gauges and if I feel it nessacery to cool it down a bit any cooler would probably help I dont want the trans thermastat so if it does get hotter than I like I might start with a $50-60 one from the parts house. Thanks for all the good input I did defiantly learn something.
Lost mine at 107,000 miles. Mechanical diode issues and OD fried.
I ask Brian of BTS to put in a 6.0 trans cooler inline with my 7.3 trans cooler. He would not do that as he said that the 7.3 would restrict the the flow to the 6.0.
No it's not my experience, but it is my truck's and while I don't know what a tractor or bulldozer weighs I'm sure it's more than a fifth wheel.
I'm sure you know there is also a lot more to towing than weight. A 13'x8'x35' 11,000lb box is going to tow much different than a 15,000lb tractor on a flat deck.
That there is my argument to my brother in law who gets about 14 mpg with his travel trailer and I only get 11 with my fiver following him. I've offered to swap rigs for a trip to show him, but he doesn't have a gooseneck so the option is out.
Okay then, I now pose this question to ALL MEMBERS, CALLING ALL 7.3 FORD MEMBERS: Who here has towed 10k+ since the beginning with a stock tranny and cooler and how many miles did you get on your tranny before any overheating occurred?
15k Fifth wheel.... I bought my truck in 03 with 1100 miles on it. First trans went out at 26k... Rebuilt trans went in under warrenty ( I paid the extra to have a shift kit put in stock torque converter). Ran a v-10 cooler on that trans (obviously the 6.0 wasn't around yet/ not realized as a good upgrade), soooooo. That trans let go at 230k. Now I have a JW and a 6.0 cooler...I'm good to go!

You are on the right track, get gauges, if the temps are high, swap coolers. If you don't tow real heavy, a v-10 cooler might work well for you, or a tru-cool unit.
I put a cold air intake and 4" exhaust and tuner and gauges on my 02 and headed for eastern oregon last july pulling my 33' fifth wheel and soon realized with my new trans guage that it was getting pretty hot. I got back and did some research on this site, went to a wrecking yard and bought a 6.0 cooler out of an 04 and installed it and it madea substantial difference-WOW. The other thing that was nice is that it bolted right in place of the old one but it was like 4 times larger. I couldn't be happier, my trans temps are now 130-140 empty and 150-175 pulling my fifth wheel. Mike...I used to pull the same trailer with my 99 7.3 and didn't have gauges, I was just lucky.
