My block just went to the hot tank (milestone), so I am going through the rest of the parts.
I have 3 flywheels, but dont really know which one to use. They all look ok, but I wanted to use the one with the most 'meat'.
The service manual wasnt much help.
Would anyone know a spec. measurement or any way to tell other than a visual?
Chris , i think if you get ahold of an "older" automotive machine shop/machinist , they have/had spec books for stuff like that ,
fellow i use here in London is Greg Churcher , Horton Machine , 519 642 4133,, lv a message if he's not there and he'l call you back , mention my name for a good seat !!!.......... Jim Prowse,,,,,,
Please post the spec if the shop has one. My flywheel has been cut a couple of times thru the years, and at some point you're supposed to shim between the crank and the flywheel, but I don't know what the break point is.
It has been stated on the Flathead Forum many times that it is critically important to re-countersink the PP bolt holes, because the bolts have a shoulder that sits inside the holes. If you cut enough and don't deepen the countersink, you can start a crack or be unable to completely tighten the PP. Bad juju either way.
I suppose the next question would be how far can you shim the flywheel back before you run into starter engagement and/or jamming issues? Shimming moves the ring gear back from spec.
All 3 of the engines I dissasembeled had the shims.
One flywheel still had a 'raised' portion where the clutch disc engages. My thinking is it has never been resurfaced.
Will update..................
Chris, that's a new one on me. I'm certain factory was dead flat. Got a picture? See the pic below; one on the left is a 59-series flywheel, WILL NOT work on a 8BA (for other reasons, on the backside). Is that the lip you were talking about?
Wayne, the typical surfacing removes .010" - .015" so the shims are not that thick. I'm thinking .030", but there's nothing showing in the parts CD.
Actually I meant the surface the clutch disc contacts. It is raised ever so slightly.
I'll do my best to get some pics tomorrow

No spec as of yet, but here are some pics of what I have (arrow showing slight raised area)
My bad on the shims. I was mixed up with the plate that goes between the flywheel and the bolts.
