People: I have a friend who has a 427. the engine havn´t flywheel(for clutch)
he need to build a disc, but we now that these engine have the flywheel unbalanced. anyone can tell me some about this thing? or some web page where I can find some info.
The flywheel all FE engines except the 428 are internally balanced. That means the flywheel is balanced by itself as is the crank (there is room for the counter balancing inside the block) . The 428 didn't have enough room to balance the crank inside the block and some of the counter balance weights are on the flywheel, otherwise it matters how the flywheel lines up on the crank. If that flywheel isn't balanced on it's own it's a 428 flywheel and don't use it.
I used to race 390, 427 and 428CJ's back when they were all there was for a big block Ford guy to run. After building a few you learn what is and what isn't. Of cousre I have a lot of reference books to help the old memory and I did look this up to confirm it.
I bought a 428 back in the 80's that happened to have a std 390 wheel on it. Boy, could not figure out the shake...LOL!! Til I researched a bit and found out the reason. Once I got a true 428 wheel, it was smooth as glass.
Now all my 428's get neutral balanced so that flywheel changes are simple.
