Ok so i just bought a 1979 f250 4x4 that is pretty decent except the dash wiring is a bit hacked up it had a cut up original gage cluster with aftermarket mechanical gages so i got another original cluster from the junkyard with a plug that all the wires are the same color i so far have gotten most of it to work but have several wires left over anyone got a diagram showing what wire does what and whwre in the plug it goes? so far i have the fuel gage, oil pressure, temperature, both turn indicators and the beam indicator working and still have a red hot wire a fat pink wire and a fat grey wire and 2 others with no home dont want to hook them up and fry something or burn down my new toy so any help is appreciated
Does the "fat pink wire" have "resistor wire do not cut or splice" printed on the insulation?
If it does, that's the hot in run wire from the ignition switch to the coil.

It does not the fat (10 gage) wire is connected to the fat grey wire so i assume that at one time they went to the amp gage the resistor wire is there though it is thankfully untouched also i looked at the wiring diagram you posted the link to and now know what color wire goes where i would still like to know what each wire does THANKS for your help!!!!

Reason: left stuff out

Those won't be for the ammeter. Unlike your typical ammeter, full amperage does not go through the ammeter, it uses a shunt to measure the amp load of the alternator and sends that to the ammeter. The shunt is located in the alternator wiring harness between the alternator and voltage regulator.
Ok so now i have followed the diagram on fordfication.net and everything is working except the amp gage i have no wires left to connect to it the only wire i have left is an orange wire that doesnt seem to serve any purpose the diagram calls for an orange wire and i have another that is a hot wire and i tried unhooking one and connecting the other which killed power to the gages also the gas gage wont work unless i reverse the black and the orange opposite the diagram dunno why but its working now also as an interesting side note there is a green/red wire that isnt shown in rhe diagram but ties in with all this as it sends power to the voltage regulator and the choke thermostat and i was wondering why my choke was staying on so long andmy headlights were so dim this morning
A think red/green under the dash is a constant hot wire for the cigarette lighter. It shouldn't be tied to the choke. Got any pics?
No pics or more accuratelyno way to post them anyway there is a green/red wire connected to the I terminal on the voltage regulator and then to the choke though i dont think the wire connected to the choke was intended for that purpose as the truck originally came with a hot air choke also i think the wire to the cig lighter is orange not 100% sure though. the wiring behind the instrument cluster is so hacked up i doubt it will ever be right although the only things that are currently not working are the amp gage and the dome lite
I want to rewire my entire truck and build my own harnesses- anyone know where to buy ford wires? there are some simple wire sets on ebay, but they don't have the yellow/red, black yellow & other stripe wires

These two companies can provide color coded wire in bulk lengths.
Ford also used some odd terminals in their harnesses, some but not all of these terminals are still available through obsolete suppliers or aftermarket suppliers. www.riwire.com www.narragansettreproductions.com
Here are some of the odd terminals that Ford uses. You'll also need a special pair of crimping pliers to crimp the terminals to the wire. These are refered to as non-insulated open barrel terminals.
