This post is from a neophyte to forums and i have two issues that have been ongoing for over a year. They only occur occasionally but can be disconcerting when they do occur. Would appreciate any guidance.
Vehicle<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> 2002, F250 super duty, 4 WD, 7.3<o></o> Issues<o></o> 1.Under pulling conditions on steep inclined I experience a power loss where engine almost stalls. After a few seconds I regain power after letting up on the accelerator. I have changed filters and rebuilt drain valve on fuel filter bowl. Old one was leaking.<o></o> 2.On rough roads engine light will come on and engine will stop. Occasionally engine will run rough. So far it will start again or run smoothly on its own.<o></o>
For both problems the first thing to do is to get the codes read by someone that has the right scan tool. Without the codes all anyone can do is guess. Such as the HPOP guess. There is no basis for that guess without knowing the codes.
Thank you for your reply.
Engine light came on and I had a code scan read. Nothing came up on the read
Sounds to me like you got it scanned with a code reader that's incapable of reading more than generic codes. I'm going to send this one down to the 7.3L Powerstroke forum, you will probably find more help down there for your specific problem.
We had a lady on here one time that had the problem going up hills. She had all kinds on things done at dealers and it didn't cure the problem. For her it was the in tank mods that cleared her problems. On rough roads. Maybe a harness at the valve covers. Again easy checks but guesses. You really need a special scan gauge to read these diesels. The intank problems won't come up on a scan.
To me, it would be worth it to have a dealer read the codes ($100), then proceed.
OR.... buy an OBDII gauge or AE to have this capability from now on as your vehicle ages. I've done about $10,000 worth of computer readings and tests to fix every little nuance in my truck. I have been recording my data and I can look back to see what has changed over time. It might be overkill if your budget is tight, but my AE has payed for itself many times over and I keep it with me in case I have an issue when far from home. This can mean the difference between a $30 fix and a lost hour on the road, or having your vacation and budget wiped out in a single stall. One time my truck wouldn't start at a hotel breezeway (on vacation 200 miles from home) and AE told me my transmission wasn't in park, even though it was. The transmission connector was loose. It took me 1/2 hour to hook up AE, troubleshoot the problem, fix it, and be on my merry... no charge. The savings on the towing charge alone paid for the AE package.
If this sounds familiar, do the Hutch mod immediately:
8-5-12 Driving from Idaho to Sacto, van started losing power uphill. We would pull over and wait ten minutes and drive up the remainder of the hill and continue until the next hill where we would repeat the process.
