Is this rare? (Data Tag)

I have a '49 Ford truck. The data tag from the glovebox has the 97HC prefix which means Inline 6 correct? But the model has 9RC which indicates V8?. The previous owner said he remembers the original six cylinder engine. Has anyone else come across the factory stamping incorrectly?

I'm going to have a new data plate stamped for the glovebox door. Should I stamp as the old one is stamped?

I would place mis-stamped tags in the catagory of uncommon, but not rare. There's plenty of examples around to verify they happened, such as yours, but when you consider the numbers of trucks built and how few mistakes that were made by regular, ordinary human beings in an assembly line atmosphere, overall I'd say they probably did a pretty good job. That's my opinion, anyway, fwiw.

I'm assuming the mfg. plant code and serial numbers are the same? I would go by what is stamped on the frame

Early vin's don't have mfg. plant codes in them. Only year, engine, model and consec. unit number. On the old style glove box tag, there's a box in the lower right corner for the model code, which corresponds with the first part of the vin. (if it's stamped right

)

I didn't think 48-50's had glovebox tags? I thought they had the firewall tag instead? So they had both, AND a frame stamp? Easy to see how they could get out of synch.

They have all three.

Are we sure that model number (9RC) is incorrect for a factory six cylinder truck? Would the model change based on whether or not the truck was an 8 or 6 cylinder? I know the vin number is different, but does that also apply to the three digit model number? Just trying to learn here.

Ross, yes, they had all three, glove box, firewall tags and a frame stamp. The only clue to assembly plant was additional letters after the vin on the firewall tag, and any stampings that might have been done on the firewall itself.

Shane, yes, the model code would designate year (8, 9 or 1 for early 51's) engine (H, R, M, etc) and series C, D, Y, T, TH, TL, etc.

48-51 had three stampings: glove box tag, firewall tag and frame.
52 only had two stampings: glove box tag and frame. No firewall tag. The serial data number (VIN) was stamped into the glove box tag. Some late 51s also had the 52 style glove box tag.

Not all 6 cylinders had H codes, only the 226's. The 254's had M codes there.
