Do you have a high output alternator? I've read that higher than stock charge currents will fry the stock meter. You can get it converted to a volt gauge to solve the problem.

The one on the cleveland was 200amp. So I'd say that this is what caused the problem.
The new one is 130 amp.
The gauge is fine now that the copper foils have been reconnected. I'm looking at bypassing the foils from the loom connector to the gauge with separate wires.
It really is only an indication of charge or discharge, so may have to add an extra shunt across it.
200 amp . Yep that'll knacker it, I think they are only good for 40 or 50 amps!
The original altenator was a 55 amp, so even the 130 amp is probably too big for it. At fast idle (1000rpm) it's showing about half scale charging. I'll put a real ammeter on it and see how much is actually going through the gauge.

Yes, it's in the Fairlane with the cleveland . Goes quite nice.
Got a couple of coats of white on the left door, still need to put the pearl and clear on.
Started braze welding the holes in the left guard.
Made an additional warning lights panel, this goes where the automatic gear indicator goes. I've got labels coming which will go on a lens across the front of them.
Installed the rear shocks, I need to lengthen the bump stops as the minimum length of these shocks is 445 and the bump stop allows the
shock to come down to 405 which will destroy the shock. So need to put a 50mm spacer between the chassis and the bump stop. Reduces up travel but the maximum length of the shocks 727mm so lots of down travel. Springs stop at 700mm so no issue there for down travel.
Looking great. I had to laugh on the w/e, I saw a guy drive past in a jacked up Patrol, it had a big sticker on the back 'Built not bought!'. I guess he did bolt a few add-ons on.
Ross, your truck is definitely Built NOT Bought! Great stuff.
