Clemens was a riverboat pilot, in order to determine the depth of the water, a weighted line was used. "mark twain" is two fathoms (12 feet).

What, you ask a swabbie that and think your not going to get the correct answer...? O crap, I'm in trouble now...
Hand lead used to measure under 20 fathoms. Usually marked at 2,3,5,7,10,15,17,20. Leadsman call out the depths. Usually weighted down buy 'grunt's' but we found they where scarrrrrring off the fish and they just wouldn't sink, they just kept flooting back the the surface... Hot air I guess... BOY, am I really going to get crap for that one...
