Intermittent wipers?? (question)

I have a '75 highboy and before replacing the wiper switch I looked to see if it was a standard switch or intermittent. I wanted to be sure due to the dramatic difference in cost.
I then replaced with the intermittent wiper control switch and tested to find out the motor only works if the switch is on high. No other position on the switch operates the wiper motor. Is it possible the motor may need replacing? Anyone run into this problem?

Nick

Your question is a little confusing.
Do you have intermittent wipers and replaced the switch with an intermittent switch or a regular switch, or do you have standard wipers?
If you want intermittent wipers there's more to it than just changing the switch. There is a black box (governor) that actually gives you the intermittent action.

ok. I just compared the switches and bought the one that resembled the old one. Where would I find the control box? If I do not have one, would I be able to add one to the existing motor?

The switches look identical, the difference is on the standard switch from the off position you can only turn it clockwise. On the delay switch from the off position you can turn it clockwise like the standard switch OR counter-clockwise to actuate the delay function.
Adding the delay function is simple. The governor box fits up under the dash. It has two wire pigtails. One pigtail plugs into where the wiper switch plugs on the wiring harness, the other pigtail plugs into the wiper switch.
Also, be sure the switch is grounded or the delay function won't work.
Here is a fairly poor picture of the governor box.

you can get one out of a 87-91 ford truck, or 80-86 ford truck, I think 78 was the first year for them in the trucks, but there hard to find, they pop up on ebay alot. but basiclly all ford trucks used the same wiring connector so you can take that box and switch out of any later model up to 91 and put inter. wipers into anything back to, I think the early sixties.

Damn, did you go to ford wiper college? Thanks for the info. Easy to do, just need to get the box. I can probably find it at a wrecking yard.

X2 totally plug 'n' play using the 80s wiper switch and governor.

The only somewhat tricky part is the windshield washer function. You'll actually plug that 2 prong connector in "backwards" from what you think. Bascially plug all the connectors in and test for function. If the spray doesn't work, reverse the connector.

Hope that makes sense. It's a nice upgrade.

Guys, FYI the same setup is in '77-'79 Thunderbirds and Cougars ect, just have to swap a couple of wires around to use in the Fseries.
I have put one directly into a '65 Mustang and it works perfectly.

Very true, however, a junkyard is going to have more 70s T-birds or 80s F-series in the yard?

On the harness I obtained from an 89 Bronco, the two wire female connector (from my truck) only had one of the two male connectors (from the new harness) present; it appeared to be an empty spot rather than being broke.

Should the remaining wire simply be plugged into the existing male connector?

A similar discussion to this one is going on in a different thread:

The connector you're referring to, is it the at the washer bottle? Or at the switch?

I haven't attempted this (yet) but plan to do so. Also need to replace the multi-piece washer bottle with a 1 piece unit.......

It's at the wiper switch on the trucks main harness.

On the 1980/up the connector is one piece.

On the 1973/1979 the connector is two pieces. You want the smaller two wire connector. You can either remove and transpose the wires, or turn the connector around and fit it in backwards.

So, the plug at the switch is a 2 piece plug, unlike the 80+ trucks that have a single plug at the back of the switch/governor? Interesting...... It fits ok reversed?
But, the 80+ switch & governor is a simple "plug and play" swap, aside from the washer plug *possibly* needing reversed? That would be cool, I can get ahold of the 80+ items quite easily, since I already did it on my 80.......
